Installing 1.6 Pro Mags, LT4 Springs, etc.

Well I am planning on upgrading my vavletrain to 1.6 Pro Mags and other supporting components. I am just trying to make sure I have everything and get some points down about the install.

Have:
Comp Cam Pro Mags 1.6 - 7/16 - NSA
LT4 Springs, Shims, Keys, Caps (from LT4 Kit)

Getting:
7/16 Studs - ARP/Comp Cam
Hardened Pushrods - Comp Cam
GMPP Guideplates

Do I need anything else, like valve seals, etc?

Also I am going to try and get some people who have experience with valvetrain over for the install (either from the board or uncle/friends) since I am a newbie to all of this.

My uncle has a set of valvecovers made so you can adjust the rockers without losing oil everywhere. Would this be a good idea/method, I heard its the best.? And what is the exact turn you should use on the larger studs? 1/25th?

Thanks.

do you plan on getting a cam one day, cuz if you are i suggest you get some springs that can handle more than the LT4's which top out at .525

Its a possbility down the road, but so far down that the LT4's will do fine for now. Thanks for the heads up though.

You have it covered.

For the springs, I only used the springs, retainers(cap) and locks(keys). I think the shims are the same as the LT1.

I like to adjust the rockers with the car off. You can do 8 at a time and it goes fast. If you have stock lifters, you want 3/8 of a turn after zero lash, so basically right between 1/4 and 1/2 a turn.

1/2 turn worked fine for me. I didn't replace the valve seals or shims.

I didn't use new valve seals either, but I only had 69,000 on the car and don't burn any oil.

Because of the coarse thread pitch on the 7/16" studs, 3/8 turn equals about 1/2 turn with 3/8" studs.

Thanks very much guys, I was wondering about valve seals. My car only has 59k and doesnt burn oil, it just leaks it like every other 350 in the world.

Well I'll make a trip to Summit soon and get everything else, then I am ready for an install. Looks like Darkhorse and Grease might help me out locally so I dont botch the install and ruin my engine.

Also BudM, I was wondering if you had any information on how you did your cold air scoop? I was looking to do some free mods and your scoop looks immaculate compared to all others. It doesnt look cheap or out of place, but very professional. Could you write up a parts list and some intructions or something? If not that then some dimensions and tools needed? Thanks. I want to do one but only if it will turn out as well as yours. I just cant get over how great that looks, is it stainless?

Anyone, did you feel much gain from 1.6's?

Re: Installing 1.6 Pro Mags, LT4 Springs, etc.

Its made from 3/32" thick aluminum plate that I got from a local surplus metal supply house. I cut it out with a bandsaw, but you can also use a jigsaw. I cleaned up the edges with files. I did the bends with a vise and some wood blocks. It was really a trial and error project as far as figuring out dimensions. I made a few patterns on paper, and when I was satisfied with the design I made it in aluminum.
And yes the gain from 1.6 rockers is noticeable.
And I did 1/2 turn on 7/16 studs.

Thanks BudM, would you mind, if you have time someday just tell me a few numbers on it so I can use it as a guide. Something like the H/W of the hole and maybe the depth of the scoop part. Thanks.

The scoop is 7" wide. The hole in the air dam is about 2 1/4" tall, from the crease to about 1/4 inch from the bottom of the air dam. The scoop goes back 6".

Re: Installing 1.6 Pro Mags, LT4 Springs, etc.

Thanks Bud, back to topic... I went to Summit last night and picked up ARP 7/16 studs and Comp Cam pushrods 7808-16's.

The Summit rep said they are specifcally not for LT1's, which puzzled me since Thunderracing has the same ones for a LT1. The length Summit gave me on my pushrods are 7.195, Thunder advertises 7.200. I am not sure wether one is miss quoted or what but I have been told in my other thread they should be fine. I am not even sure after seaching what the stock pushrods length is.

Pro Mags came today, I have to get the out of the apartment office tomorrow. Hopefully I can get them installed this weekend. Thanks for the help guys.
