Inspecting bearings

Last summer I had a rather unpleasent oil change.

Over the next week or two, I'm gonna pull the engine out and check the bearings. What should I be looking for?

Ellwien Engines is offering a LT1 rebearing kit at an awesome price. I am going to be using one of his kits on a friend's engine this weekend, I expect to have positive feedback.
IMO if you are going far enough to actually look at bearings, replace them.
