Insane oil pressure....

Ok, after my rebuild I thought everything was runnig fine. I put the white spring in the melling pump and I normally have about 60psi at idle and while driving.

Fast forward to today. The car has been sitting in the garage for over a week and I have been needing to find a project. I start the car up and the car sounds like it has lifter tick, I have comp R's so I assume thats the problem. Upon inspection I notice that 3 of my header bolts on my passenger side are gone towards the firewall. I replace them with new header bolts and the ticking noise is now gone. I am thinking excellent. I start the car up and it sounds even better than before. So now I decide to install my LoKar oil dipstick tube in replace of my stocker that broke off. All I had was the tube in the block, the stick broke. After installation I fire the car up, check oil etc everything checks out fine. I walk to the front of the car with a flashlight and check the engine bay, the drivers side headers seem good no leaks, WRONG. I can feel a steady stream of warm air coming from the 2nd primary on the drivers side. I shut down the engine, get my grinder out and hook up my welder.
After welding the header and starting the car up there is no more exhaust leaks. The car has more of a chop to it and sounds like what a GM847 should sound like. I am very excited. I get in the drivers seat with the car running and notice that the oil pressure is now 80psi. I get on the gas a little and the oil pressure keeps rising with the gas pedal pressure. It went to about 100psi and I let off the gas and shut the motor down. This seems a little high, however the rebuild only has 2500 miles on it.

I went with the Forged Speedpro kit. So everything should be stock clearances etc. However, from the oil gauge it seems like the clearances must be very tight.....

Any input from guys that have done builds the same as myself would be appreciated.

Nothing wrong with good oil pressure but it maybe not be accurate.

Re: Insane oil pressure....

Could be very right. I will take a manual pressure gauge and see what I get.

If it's higher than ya like go with a thinner oil and see if it comes down. 80psi hot idle is too much if it gets higher when revved it will groove the bearings all the way around, even with the oil hole in the crank.
Ask me how I know, found this out back in the late'60's.

How did you find that out back in the 60's?

Seriously I never heard of too much oil pressure.

My dirt track sprint car engine had to much(100PSI@7000) and after a couple of months when we got a break I tore it down changed the pump and decided to look at the brgs.
When I pulled the first cap I said to self, self there were no grooves in these bearings a couple of months ago. The groove was so neat it looked liked it belonged there. Looked at the mains and same thing.
Changed bearings and at the end of the season with reduced OP(55@7000 hot) the bearings looked like they came out of the box. If the crank had not been chamfered around the oil hole it would have been worse.
Today I run 100PSI on BB Fords out the back door but they have a bunch more brg clearance than my sprint engines. If ya don't they won't live.
Soooooo that is my story and I'm sticking to it.
