Initial thoughts on GM 847
Initial thoughts on GM 847
I just finished up the install last night and the car runs great.
For those of you who don't know, I had been running a CC305 for the past couple years and the car ran the numbers in the sig on stock heads. I recently purchased an '00 SS as my daily driver and now the '97 gets all the 'race car' duties. :P
The car pulls MUCH harder up top than the CC305 did. The 305 would fall off around 57-5800 RPMs where as the 847 is just getting started at this point. The SOTP gain is awesome and I don't think the car will have any trouble trapping in the 113-115 range.
As far as driveability, the cam drives great. Hardly any difference between this cam and the CC305 as far as cam surge goes. The cam is very tame even in 6th gear at ~ 55 mph (13-1400 RPMs).
Overall, I think it was a good switch. The power is awesome.
I'll have new track times this coming Friday.

hey, where was the main difference vs. your 305 cam?? through the whole rpm range or just up high?
i am considering doing a switch from my tpis zz9 cam which is only 212/226 (similar to hotcam) to something more radical, like a 227/233 or even 230/236. i think the gm847 may be too big for my setup, mainly because it would be better suited for a 383 stroker imo, but you get the idea....
the difference between the 305 and your 847 is probably not as much as my tpis to the 847, i still want to know for sake of comparison..
streetability? which springs did you end up going with??? dyno?
thanks

The 847 seems to make more power everywhere - not just up top. The streetability is just as good as the 305. I was expecting to see a lot of cam surge with the 847, but the surge is very minimal.
I haven't dynoed the car w/the new cam but I will have track/dyno numbers very soon.
I went with the K-Motion K-800 springs - they are good to .700" lift and don't require any machining.

this may be a dumb question but can those springs be used with a slightly smaller cam such as a 230/236 xe??? or are there springs that are better suited for a cam like that, if so, which ones?
thanks
thanks
