Initial Startup...what to know?

Just did a heads/cam setup, followed by all the complimenting parts plus some longtubes and offroad y. What are some things I need to know or do for my first startup? Thanks. -Matt

Helps to have some friends there to look/listen under the hood when you start it up. I've always had peace of mind by having a fire extinguisher handy, but never had to use it.

change the oil after letting it run for a while so any junk that may come off in the motor will come out. I also rechecked my valve lash after I got the motor hot and ran it through the rpm's.

Re: Initial Startup...what to know?

Do you have to run the motor at a certain RPM for a certain amount of time? Also is it alright to start the motor with some cheap oil then switch over to synthetic when I change it? I was also thinking about turning the motor over without starting it so I can get some oil flowing. Is this necessary. Sorry about all the questions but Id hate to mess something up after all the work that was put into it. Thanks. -Matt

No need to run the motor at a certain RPM. It is also ok to run cheap oil for the startup then changing it. I agree with running it for a little while then changing the oil- might want to just run it up to operating temperature, check all your work again then change the oil.

I don't think you even need to crank it to get the oil pressure up without firing, just make sure everything is hooked up and start it.
