Important Timing Question

Lets say that my timing is off by one tooth, I'm talking about the cam and crank sprocket dots not being perfectly 6/12. So lets say I'm off one tooth, how bad is this, and what would be some signals that the car would be doing that would cause this? Reason I don't know if they were 6/12 is that I went to work for a few hours while my buddy kept working on the car and he set the timing.

since there's about 36 teeth on the cam gear one tooth off is 10 degrees[not good]of cam advance or retard...
If it's the crank gear its even worse[18 teeth or 20 degrees]
