i have a 93 z 28 6 spd with 110,000 on it. i want to put a cam in it. should i rebuild the engine? or will it be ok. with out rebuild? im pretty sure things i need, are lt4 hot cam, lifters, heavy duty timing chain, vented opti. do i need pushrods, or new water pump? or not? and i need a new programed chip
how long does it take to put all of that in?
my mods are, 4:10 gears, bbk shorties, short throw. hypertech chip, low temp thermo, pulleys, crane gold 1.6rr. cai, 3" cat back. aluminum dirve shaft , Lca's panhard rod.
thanks, just wondering if i should rebuild it , bottom end wise too. its gonna eventually be a night time weekend, car. but still i want to drive it around. thanks

IMHO if you do a compression and leak down test on your pistons and they check out. And your oil pressure is good your bottom end should be a good candidate for a cam upgrade.
If you are going with the vented Opti you will need to move to an electronic fuel pump. Push rods should be fine unless you are planning on non self-aligning roller rockers and guide plates. Running guideplates requires hardened push rods (I don't think they were on 93s).
Reprogramming is probably a good idea but not required as the Hot Cam will run OK on a stock program. Peak performance will only be seen with a new program.

I stand corrected: sorry its not the vented opti that drives the switch to an electronic water pump its the timing chain. In my case I switched to the 95 timing cover to run an inexpensive Cloyes Timing Chain and the vented Opti.
If you run any of the GM Timing Sets for the LT1/LT4 you should be able to run the stock pump.
