import or domestic
import or domestic
i have heard alot of stories. which car is cheaper to mod. domestic or import. this includes turbo imports.
lets compare turbo imports and turbo/supercharged domestics, stock block domestic and imports, and so on.
i don't want to start a flame war, but want to read and see everybody's opinions on this issue.

It depends , lets say you have a stock honda which is pretty slow and stock Z which is pretty stout. If you add mod for mod on both cars the camaro comes out on top all the time you always get more out of the mods that you put into it. I dont know what prices range on for aftermarket crap for imports and I frankly Dont care.

Where i live when you ask a person why the bought a rice burner they reply.. Cheap insurance (Can be fixed by putting in parents name), Gas milage (Why would you care if all you are doing is pushing to the floor anyways, and i only have to put it half way down to beat them so it is about the same), and the mods are cheap (Which they might cost less but we get a better deal.. for example headers, they buy one for 150-200 and we buy 2 for 250-300). As far as modding goes it might be less time consuming for them to install certian parts but that is because they have less displacement then a 2l of Coke.
Well like the guy above was saying, depends on what you want.
If you don't care how fast it is, but just want a car to mod, then maybe the import could be cheaper, until you realize that 400hp in an import is going to cost thousands more than 400hp in a domestic, or that 11.99 timeslips going to be a lot cheaper in the domestic than the import.
Plus, if you mod a civic, in the end its still a civic, an economy car in sports car disguise.

It also depends of what kind of car you buy. Probably the cheapest car to get into the 12s is the first generation Eclipse/Talon. The cars are cheap, 3000$ easily and it costs about 500-600$ to get them in the 12s especially if you buy used parts.
An F-body costs more to get into the 12s and a civic costs even more than a Camaro to get into the 12s, even with N2O. Its a mystery to me how the Honda Civic became the sports car of choice among the youth of today.

Everybody basically nailed everything.
Im with grease, but want to add one thing. DSM motors (eclipse/talon) are easy, very easy to get 350+hp out of and 12s timeslips, but you might never see those 12s timeslips because:
1. they are a pain in the *** to tune and such, running too much boost you run into detonation and need fuel management ($800) and injectors
2. they ****in break all the time, and dont forget about crankwalk, weird thing about buying dsms is, you want one with high mileage, if it got past 90k without crank walk then its good to go, before 80k you are takin a risk
In the end though, the cheapest car to ever mod would be a fox mustang, 5.0 parts are soo godam cheap it makes me sick...but your in the same boat again, no replacement for displacement, and Lt1s/Ls1s are much more efficient at making power than 5.0s

it's nice to see all ur opinions. i just wanted to see what other people felt on that topic.
i feel the same way. to put 5 grand in our cars is much faster than a civic with 5 grand in it.

A 400hp domestic will likely hook better and be more reliable than a 400hp import. Easier to get rwd to hook, and if you do get an import to hook watch out for the halfshafts. I know we have some tranny issues and the the f-body didn't get the best axle, but still they can take V8 torque for a while anyway.
The ONLY reason I really need to remind me how much I love my Z28 is because WHENEVER I go to the track here in Hawaii (bad track with many imports) I leave the track with 75% wins and 25% losses.....with a K&N FIPK and cutout, A4 2.73 gears, vert.....bottom line.

All show, no go. For the most part. However, I give respect where it is due and there are some nice imports out there: stock or modded.
ie. 300ZX, RX-7, Talon, 3000GT to name a few. However, these are all pretty expensive cars to buy, let alone mod. Although.....my car wasn't that cheap either.
Also, I'll definitely give respect to a sleeper like say a 12 sec or less civic, even if it does mean having my a$$ handed to me.

DSM's are tough to beat for a cheap mid 12 second car. For the cheapest mid to low 9 second car I think a fox mustang is the way to go. It depends on what you want.
When you say import or domestic everyone thinks you mean fwd Honda vs. rwd Camaro. Most people are forgetting about rwd toyotas, nissans, and mazdas. Also don't forget that there are some domestic fwd and awd cars (neon srt-4 and Dodge stealth vr4). There are a lot of ways to go fast.

personally if i had to pick between show or go i would pick show... the reason for this is becouse how often do u actually use all that horse power?? if u have something that looks real nice u enjoy it all the time, why do u think people buy merecedes or a BMW. becouuse it looks good on the inside and out.One reason guys want a fast car is to make there ego happy. back to the orginal Q. import parts are a ton cheaper.
