Ignition woes

Well, I think my optispark is dying, and this is why.

Occasionaly(not so occasional any more, pretty frequent now) the car doesn't start and it takes some cranking to get it started, I can hear the fuel pump prime, so I know thats good. Its also been hard starting, doesn't fire up right quick like it use to, sounds like it struggles alittle. Theres also a very slight miss at idle. I always get a the deadly P1371 code afterwards also. So, to me, this means either the wiring harness, or the optical sensor is crapping out. The opti is supposed to be new according to the guy who sold it to me, but who knows, probably full of crap. Its also been missing above 4.5k rpms, always 4500 though,

So I wanna hear your guys opinions? Defintely the opti?

I pretty much plan on putting in a new opti and a new opti harness, probably tackling it this weekend. So any tips/tricks you guys who've done this job can give me, would be appreciated, I know the water pump, and crankshaft pulley need to come off, and the fans and air dam I plan on removing to make the job easier, anything else that should come off? Wish me luck on this guys, I am gonna need it.

Re: Ignition woes

The most common ignition problem with LT1's is the opti. Dunno if your optical sensor is still good, but if I were you, I'd upgrade to a Delteq. It smoothed out my idle and acceleration, as well as help in wrapping the engine up faster...

Re: Ignition woes

You still need a healthy optical sensor for the Delteq. Your MSD box will not work with the Delteq.

Re: Ignition woes

Update: I haven't messed with the opti yet, but I've found something out, if I turn the A/C on fans high, and hot, the "mis" at idle(it ticks and if I hold my hand near the tip I can feel it pulse) is gone, whenever I turn off the a/c I can hear a ticking and feel a pulse out of the exhaust whenever it ticks. Very weird

Any ideas on what this means? Does anyone else's car do this?

Gonna try taking it tommorow on a nice WOT run and see if it misfires up top with the a/c on its raining today though.

I'll maybe try and make a video later tonight if I can.

Re: Ignition woes

I would not rule out your fuel pump. I had similar symptons. Fuel pump primed but wouldn't keep pressure. I'd hook up a fuel pressure gauge and monitor.
