Ignition Question

Hey
I was planning on installing a few things on my 97 Z. The setup i was thinking of was some Jet hot Coated LTs with dual mini cats, and mild cam with a tune. Just wondering if i would need to upgrade the stock ignition sysem.
Thanks

Re: Ignition Question

Untill you reach some big hp numbers or add a power adder such as nos or a blower then the stock set up is fine. Don't wast the money till you need it.

Re: Ignition Question

I was buying some plug wires yesterday and the guy at the counter that I was BSing with (seemed pretty smart) told me that even upgrading to 8.5mm wires I might want to upgrade my ignition system... Anyone ever heard of this?

Sorry for hijacking your thread! Im getting ready to install LTs and new plugs/wires/O2s, and am thinking about ignition problems too... Post 2 maks me think I should, and Post 3 makes me think I shouldnt. I hate when that happens. lol.

Re: Ignition Question

Would it be possible to use the opti system (with better wires, a coil etc.) With high horse power applications (500-600), or would it be better to switch over to a direct fire system?
Thanks again.

Re: Ignition Question

You'd be better switching over to a direct fire system simply because each coil has more time to recharge at high rpm. With one coil, at high rpm, you loose power in the spark since the coil is charging/discharging so quickly. With even 4 coils, that problem is gone...and having one coil per cylinder is even better.

A lot of debate has been thrown around on what I just said, but if you think about it it makes sense. I myself am switching over to the Delteq system, it seems to fit my needs the best. BTW, my 383 will be around 500hp.

Re: Ignition Question

Re: Ignition Question

I don't know if those a realistic numbers or not, but the stock ignition will be just fine for that power range.
