Ignition problem after 6-speed conversion

I swapped a T56 into my 94 Formula A4 and have had it reprogrammed, and it's started blowing ignition fuses when I put it in reverse. I took it to the dealership, against my better judgement, and $472 later they told me it was a blown ignition fuse. Well, duh. But "Mario" the service manager said he had test driven it extensively and found no problems. What I've realized since is that they have a bunch of drive-through bays at the dealer and he probably never backed it up. In any case, tomorrow I'm calling the dealer and letting them know that they need to finish fixing my car, but since I personally feel them to be totally incompetent, I'm not expecting much.

What do you guys think the cause of the problem could be? What all goes through that 10A ignition fuse?

Also, the other day I was kind of experimenting with it and at one point, after the car blew a fuse in reverse, I put it in neutral, put in a new fuse, and it still wouldn't start. I had to step up to a 30A before it would start. Dunno if that matters or not, but I thought I would mention it.

TIA!

whoa, i wish i could better help. I know that moving up in fuse rating isnt good. that doesnt help at all. Maybe its a pinched wire somewhere? Keep moving up in fuses, and somethin will burner up sooner than later.

good luck

that sounds like a mess. Did you re-do all the harness to the transmission? A4 tranny has like 20 wires
M6 has only about 6-8 wires. totally different wires, they are no way compatible with both trannys.

Not entirely true. My car is an M6 conversion and has the factory A4 harness in it. All you have to do is tape up the big round 4L60E connector and splice a few internal wires. VSS connector is the same, and reverse lights are a piece of cake.

Make sure that you're not crossing the thin-gauge brown and orange wires that originally were part of the A4 shifter connector. If those cross, they will blow fuses.

Keep me posted.

I'll check that. It's entirely possible that they got crossed. Unfortunately, I already taped up the whole lot of em, but it's messy so I'd have had to do it again anyhow.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

It's not that bad a mess. Or at least I didn't think so! LOL.
The whole trans swap was kind of a fiasco anyhow.

Did you check the wiring to the reverse lockout solenoid?

If it only happens when you put it into reverse, could it be in the reverse lockout solenoid wiring somehow??

I say this is a good bet, mine is a M6 conversion, but I never hooked up the reverse lockout. I don't have a problem.

Ditto, my purple pearl car was a conversion, and it wasn't hooked up. Works fine, just gotta muscle it into gear.
