you might have taken out the crank and not the whole motorand it would still spin, or the cam, Ive heard of that. a buddy broke his and drove it all the way home, about 15 miles. Lunati got him a new motor

its obviousn't not "locked"
trust me, if the engine went from 3000rpms to ZERO instantly, you'd know big time.
I suggest you find out why it stalled. I am going to take a stab in the dark and say fuel

If by "the starter winding up" means the starter is turning the motor over alot faster than normal, but the engine won't fire....there is a chance you broke your timing chain. That would explain the clatter before it stalled. Or you could have somehow bent the valves which would cause a lack of compression which would cause the motor to turn over easier.
PS: Were you revving really high when this "clatter" happened, or just driving around at cruise RPM?
Good luck...

I have a lift in my garAGE and when im under the car and some one is turning it over the starter will engage and just make a spinning noise but will not turn the engine over. but with a pyr bar i can walk the flywheel around .... so i know the engine isnt locked up . i was maybe at 3,000 rpm when it did this
i thought it kinda sounded like the starter engaged when i was driving and thats why now the starter wont work now. has that ever happend ?
