Idling problems after mods

i finally fired up the car after my recent mods, and i am having trouble with it idling correctly. The car starts right up, idles rough, but revs fine. after its revved up, i let off the throttle and it will drop down to maybe 500/600 rpms and either die or surge up to 1500 then back down to regular (rough) idle.
the SES light comes on maybe 15 seconds after its started. It's a '95, so i have no way of scanning it. Any suggestions as to where i could begin to look?

Recent mods= hotcam kit, push rods, 1.6 rockers, e-wp, headers, madz28 tune, and new plugs and wires.

p.s- i got the powertune from madz28, which states that you have to use premium fuel. i plan on doing this, however, i have a full tank of 87 in it right now from before i stored it for the winter. could this have anything to do with it? thanks in advance

Why, because it is a 1995, you have no way to scan it? That's what you need to do. Find out what the trouble code is and look at the operating values of the sensors to help pinpoint any issue. You can always look for obvious hoses and such not put back correctly. No scanning needed to do that.

87 octane fuel

The fuel shouldn,t be the cause, i put in 90(mid grade) last fall and some fuel stabilizer and it ran good when i brought it out.I am going to put a bottle of fuel system cleaner and 92 octane for the first tank and see if my damn KR goes away.

The SES light is your best bet in starting the troubleshooting process. Get it scanned, maybe you forgot to plug in a sensor or left a vacuum line or something disconnected.

You can download free scanning software from TTS DataMaster or FreeScan. The only cost, assuming you have a laptop to run the software on, would be a cable that would specifically match your computer (e.g. USB) and your ALDL connector.

okay- so after checking things out, i found some problems. First, the stock intake elbow is ripped where it connects to the throttle body. Second, the passenger side y-pipe was not fully sealed up with the header, causing the o2 sensor to get fresh air. THIRD, i extended the driver side o2 sensor with 12 gauge wire and solder, not knowing that it would mess up the resistance and such. Im thinking that once i correct all 3 of these problems, she should be running like a champ. right?

Any of those three things can cause issues, so button them up and go from there.
