Angry Idle/stumble/HELP ME!

Im starting to get pretty pissed off now, i've been waiting for someone to help me figure out what the problem is with my car but everyone seems to be "busy".

THe problem - im driving around, just got done from doing a stock rebuild with a cam, put about 1500 miles on it - drove to atlanta and back - im driving around one day to pick up a friend - i start to notice a slight sound comming from the engine bay, it sounded like an exhaust leak so i figured it was just my temp fix on my edlebrocks for the emision hole (passgr. header all the way back by #8) as im driving back to my house a little less than 5miles, the sound starts to get louder and now resembles a plastic bag in the wind, so im accl'n - decl'n to see if its the exhaust, i get about 300yrds from my house and then i hear a "pop" and the car stumbles and won't idle, i have to feather the exhuast to keep it running long enough to get it in my driveway and that was the end of that.

Now- the car will run, but will not idle (i must feather it to keep it running. The plugs #'s 1,3 look dark and 7 looks dark with build up all around the spark thing (can't think of the name). i figured i broke a ring but their is no smoke billowing from either the exhaust nor head.
I thought well, maybe a blown headgasket, nope my oils dark as can be. So i can't really think of what it is, my car was running rich for those 1500miles, i changed my oil three times before 400miles
and nothing seemed out the ordinary, just smelled a little gasy.

So i dont know what to think, my car sits and i do nothing. I can't continue this pattern, its my only car to drive. Also i spent 6months rebuilding it after it broke down 2 weeks after i bought it. HELP HELP HELP....and no b.s comments please i have a medical problem that gives me a short temper and im already pissed.

Try unplugging the MAF and see if it will idle.

Why don't you do a few tests to see what's going on I think your chasing ghosts personally but if I felt it was internal, I would pull out my leak down tester and coolant pressure tester.

The first thing I would do is find the source of running rich. You should NEVER smell gas in the oil. This however could be the source of idling crappy and running sluggish and fouled plugs. Several things could cause it. You mentioned you might have an exhaust leak. If that is true, the O2's could be tricked into thinking the engine is lean and then the PCM would richen the mixture. If you're having trouble finding an exhaust leak, use a white piece of paper. When it gets close to a leak, it will discolor.

Next point: What did you exactly do when you did the "stock rebuild"? What was disconnected or replaced? Could something have been left off or loose or connected incorrectly? Depending on what you did, maybe somethings need to be retorqued since they have been run. What about removing things during the rebuild but didn't get fresh gaskets??? The EGR comes to mind.

last point: Check the fuel pressure after the engine is shut off and see how fast the pressure drops off. Also check the vac line to the FPR and see if it's wet. Either one of these could make the engine run rich.

Hope that helps
Dave
