Identify this part and earn yourself a cookie

I know this is a sensor of some sort, but for what.

Location: infront of the hood latch under the hood, held on by two bolts, clearly visible when hood is open

description: little black box with a small yellow (plug a wire in) attachment area on the right side. I went to the junk yard today and found that 94's and 95 firebirds had them. I do not have one in my car, or at least in the visible stock location. So does any one know what it is??? is it only for obd 1 cars??
