i want to ditch my 224/230

i want more power!!!! im looking to switch out my cam. i have comp cam 987 springs max lift .600. im not willing to change out springs. i would like the gm 847 cam but the lift on that thing around .595 with 1.6 rr. my car dynoed 338 rwhp 338 tq with my current setup. i also have mildy ported heads. i would like to see maybe a 30hp increase. any suggestions guys.

HP and TQ figures are equal!!! You must be making max power at 5250 rpm, which is somewhat low. I guess you can benefit from a larger cam that will give max power at around 6000, maybe cc306, xe 230/236.

Re: i want to ditch my 224/230

yeah before dynoing the car it did seem to fall off right around 5000rpm. i know there isnt that big of a difference between a 350 and 355. when the car was a standard bore with this cam it seemed faster. i did lose 3 mph in trap speed. i went from trapping 89 to 86 in the 1/8th mile. the car is setup exactly the same except the larger cubes. so is there a particular cam that goes well with a 355?

Your heads are ported, do you still have the flow sheet, if so try to get a custom cam. The cam guy will need to know the flow and he'll design the best cam for your application. Talk with him and give him your needs, the custom cam will suit you better than any of the shelve cam, and it will only cost you 50-100 more.
I recommend you talk with Joe Overtone (make a search) or Bret (sstrokerace).
Good luck.

Re: i want to ditch my 224/230

I dont think Joe is making custom cams anymore.

I ran the cc306 and i made 348 rwhp on stock heads, stock rockers, MAC headers, and stock TUNE!

It all depends on how big you wanna go. Bigger cams will just shift the powerband up. Dont expect much more TQ, but I could see an increase of 30 HP by moving to a 847 cam. Make sure you get a good valvetrain to handle the RPMs. I learned that the hard way.

BTW: Cmotorsports 612 springs/retainers CANT handle 6800 rpm.

If your heads flow good you should be making more power with your current set-up. You said your heads have a minor port job. Do you have flow numbers? Maybe you should get your heads fully ported. With quality ported heads I would expect around 360RWHP with your combo.

Do you mean float or broken springs?

Re: i want to ditch my 224/230

floated valves, hit a piston, exploded said piston, snapped 2 rods, put a hole through the block the size of my fist, put a hole in the oil pan, LE2 heads required EXTENSIVE welding to repair and 16 new valve seats, snapped off 2 valves, rounded off 3 lifter rollers, and ruined my cc306 (maybe repairable).

It was a sad day to say the least.

When I had the springs tested, they were 90 lbs on the seat and 190 open. Talk about crap.

Hmmm....

I've got an XE 224/230 like you with ported heads, LT's, all that jazz. I put down 366rwhp / 355rwtq running out of fuel. With 30# injectors I had the car running 12.9 @ 111 with a 1.9 60'... gotta get that shifting down and it should be seeing low 12's.

I'd recommend what others above are doing: contact a company and get a big, NASTY custom grind.

I will personally be knocking on the .600" margin by the end of this summer

Re: i want to ditch my 224/230

i'm thinkin about getting headers, with a y pipe, along with a new cam, and intake manifold.

should i get my car dynoed to figure out which cam is best for me? should i wait till i install the headers and y pipe first?

Re: i want to ditch my 224/230

I put down 338 rwhp 338 rwtq with just that cam and shorty headers. Now with mild heads and LTs Im hoping for at least 375rwhp.

Did you reuse your pistons? If not then you might have lost some compression if your builder didnt go with stock cc pistons. Or possibly the timing chain was put on 1 tooth off.

Re: i want to ditch my 224/230

i thought most people were hitting 350-360 rwhp out of this cam. original tune was for a 350, now its a 355. will that make a huge diff? i never dynoed it before i dropped the valve. the car just doesnt feel as powerful as it did before.

no the pistons are not stock. number 2 was destroyed by a dropped valve. the wall had deep scuffs in it, where the rod kept banging around. the pistons are just the forged rebuild kit out of summit.

Did you put it together yourself or did a shop do the work? Reason I ask is it may be possible the timing chain is off a tooth unless you can varifiy it isnt.
