What are the symptoms of a clutch on its last leg?? How do you know if its sliping? I just tryed lauching it on the street and when i got out i smelled the burning clutch odor . So how do i know when the clutch has had it? Sorry if this dosnt make sense, I have a tendency to ramble. Thanks.

Is that the first time it has slipped or is it slipping regularly? I knew mine was going because it would slip all the time under heavy throttle. A good way to test it is to run 60mph in 4th gear, puch the clutch in, rev to 6K and dump it. If it slips then its time for a new one if it doesn't slip then you're ok. Another way is to lug it up a hill in 6th and put the gas pedal to the floor...again if it slips then you need a new one. Hope this helps.

get on a highway or interstate and put it in 6th gear, than mash on the peddle, if your rpm's go up but your car doesnt accelerate, than you have a burnt clutch

I guess that answers my question I noticed it doing that this morning. I guess all those times powershifting 2nd thinking I was smoking my tires it was really the clutch!

I need to search now on a write-up on replacing it. Never done it before. Done a Ford AOD though.

Just my 2 cents - when my clutch went at 60,000, I had noticed it seemed to not disengage when I came to stops with the clutch pedal in....it was almost a grinding. Upon acceleration, going into 2nd began as only a grind, but eventually became a chore: it required that I shift hard and fast (this caused only a minimal grinding). Sooo.....at 60,000 I used the burnt out clutch excuse to convince my gf to let me do a motor swap Soo....it was a stretch, but out came the motor and trans Just a suggestion....If you're really good at stretching the truth

You can tell your clutch is slipping when the tach goes up, but the speedo doesn't. Its because the friction material on the clutch disc has worn away so much that the pressure plate doesn't have enough travel to hold it to the flywheel. I am going to replace my clutch in the spring. I first noticed it slipping on the e-way in 6th gear, as was mentioned above. It's a pretty straightforward process, but its a lot easier with a lift. Just have a friend there with you to help get the transmission down and out of your way. They are heavy.

Ditto slipping is when the rpm goes up but the mph does not increase accordingly.

Mine slips bad in 5th 6th when u mush the pedal, still gets me around town til spring though, i got a stock clutch with 32k on it out a wreck and a brand new slp setup, might just put the stocker in, use that up then next year use the trusty ole slp unit... about how long do clutch installs take or should i jsut pay a shop 2-300 bucks?

If you have a lift, you could do it in about 30 minutes if you are new to it. Altough that doesn't include resurfacing the flywheel. If you are going to replace the clutch/pressure plate/bearing, and not the flywheel, you need to take it to a qualified machine shop or dealership to get it resurfaced and checked for trueness. Especially if you clutch has been slipping lately, its burning the surface of the flywheel. When you get everything out, notice the heat discoloration on it. Depending on your setup, I'd plan a saturday or sunday to put your clutch in if you're not using a lift. Its a PITA to do, but not worth paying a shop to do it.

This sounds retarded, but I would like osmething to visualize. Anyone got a link to pics of a pressure plate/clutch/throwout bearing etc.? I s'pose I can do a google image search.

Is getting the flywheel resurfaced pretty much a walk-in job that any tranny shop can do? How much does that ~ go for?

Dave -

Check out my clutch replacement URL=http://http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/fbody/t56.htm]notes here[/URL]. Also, check out a coupl of hte other write-ups that are more step-by-step...

Here (http://www.zmydust.com/lt1clutch.html)

and here (http://www.ws6.com/slpclutc.htm)

The last one used to have pics, but they seem to be gone.

As far as the flywheel, any good tranny should be able to machine yours in a couple hours tops. Don't pay more than $20-30. If they try to sell you a brand new one find a different shop!

Good luck, this is a pretty straight forward job for anyone with moderate mechanical ability.
