I think I have an idea why my opty lasted sooo long
I removed my 149k mile opty and opened it up. Please not I noticed a small amount of oil come out of the small vent opening. Well its opened now and there is no rust whastoever on the metal optical disk. It is however coated with a light amount of oil and no dirt at all. The Cap Rotor portion shows a medium amount of aluminum rust where the spark happens but not wear at all for the mileage of that car that is...
I see a few small amounts of nearly invisible markings on the cap that I believe is some kind of carbon tracking. I have to tilt it to make the light shine on it to see it.
So I believe the reason it lasted so long maybe due to the oil on the optical timing plate kept it from rusting and perhaps I have a "not" so strong ignition coil and that kept the carbon tracks to a minimum.
what do you guys thing of this? it looks like I could just slap that old sucker back on.... even though I have a new one on the way.
