Could be that you have a warped rotor. I would venture to say that would happen before a ball joint. Jack the car up and lift up on the tires. You should fell some free play or hear a slight klunk if the ball joint is worn.

You think a rotor could be warped enough to cause me to feel that going down the highway, but not feel the brake pedal pulsate when applying the brakes?
