I need proven info!!

I was reading about ported/descreened MAF's and now I'm sweating bullets! This weekend, I took out my MAF and used Patman's page as a guide. I took apart the MAF, cut out the blades in the ends, ground them down and then polished them. I did NOT however cut out any of the plastic on the sensor, and I put the screen back in as well. I also used some electronics cleaner (the sensor was nasty!), and cleaned up the sensor. I also reset the PCM. Now, I have not driven it because it has been very cold and snowing up here, and after reading some of the posts, I am very worried that I may be hitting someone up for some MAF ends. If anyone has done this with their F-Body, please let me know, and let me know what kind of problems-if any you had. I know that this mod won't make much power, but I was bored and trapped in the house, so hey I went for it. BTW, I have an OBD 1 car with no programming done to it whatsoever. All I have done so far are the free mods.

It's a hit and miss kinda thing. I had a ported and descreened maf on my 94 TA and didn't notice the diffrence. I have seen some people develop a low rpm stumble from it and backfiring through the intake.

Probably ok, but I would be on the look out for some cheap ends w/screen, just in case you plan on doing any mods w/programing.JMHO

Ditto on this info...

I ported and polised mine before I read in-depth of the difficulty of tuning with it....but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to programming...

BTW, I didn't notice a bit of difference in performance, maybe 1mph at most in the 8th(but my clutch is iffy, so I attributed that to launch)

Here's mine:

MAF port1
MAF port2
MAF port3
MAF port4

Hope this helps!

Billy

Thanks for your replies, Red Hot, I noticed that you left the black plastic alone as well. Did you also put the screen back in? I've noticed that the people that seem to have the most problems take out the screen and cut out the black plastic. Hopefully that is the issue, and the little bit of work that I did to it doesn't hurt anything (I have to stay on the wife's good side if I want the new exhaust!!)

Same here and I did about 3 years ago. No adverse effects. Maybe initially when I did it, I felt a little throttle response in the butt-o-meter, but that is just a maybe.

I descreened and ported my MAF too some time ago. I also removed the black plastic piece eventually. IMO, porting the MAF was a waste of time and effort. I did notice much better throttle reponse originally but it gradually disappeared over the next few days as the overall feel returned closer to stock. The motor also idled like crap from the moment I installed the ported MAF and it had a low rpm stumble. I bought stock MAF ends off a fellow board member, put them back in and didn't notice the slightest drop off in performance over the ported ends. However, when I put the screen back in it really choked the motor up again, so I took it out for good this time. The car just feels a whole lot stronger without the MAF screen. I don't doubt that removing the screen messes up the BLMs, but the motor seems pretty comfortable with this mod. However, hang on to the screen if you ever want to go with aftermarket ECM programming.
