I need a good pushrod supplier...

I'm running TFS heads and Jesel shaft mount rockers. SR with spring that are 225lbs seat pressure. I need a 7.850" pushrod. I ordered a set of Comp Hi Tech 3/8" x 7.850 from Summit almost 2 weeks ago. Well they keep pushing the expected ship date back and I am tired of waiting. I just want pushrods so I can get the motor together. I am calling Summit tonight to cancel them.

Where can I get a good set of pushrods that will stand up to race engine abuse? I am trying to keep these under the $200 mark. I have had Manton pushrods suggested to me by a friend but he also said I probably wont get them on my budget. He told me a good PR from them will run $20-$30 each.

Crane has a "fast turn-around" program for custom push-rods. I have the 3/8" chromoly Crane's and am very happy with them. I faxed my custom order direct to Crane and had the push-rods in about 2 to 3 days.

I use Smith Brothers pushrods for all the race/custom stuff.

If you want to go top drawer, here are a few choices:

http://www.trendperform.com/

http://www.mantonracing.com/index.html

or as Machinist recommended:

http://www.pushrods.net/

or even Jesel:

Sometimes Comp has parts in stock that Summit doesn't. You could go direct to Comp.

I recently purchased 16 pushrods from Manton. They were the #4 and were under $200. Got them in two days. Some of the finest pushrods out there.

Manton is THE best with excellent customer service to boot. Not much more $$$ than the others, either.

Looks I'll buy some new Manton pushrods also since I will be in the market? What are you guys using for a cheap pushrod length checker?

Yeah I have the TF checker also. Its nice since it has jam nuts and you can roll the motor over without changing out your valve springs and not break it. The hard part is once you have the right length you have to have an acurate way of measuring the checker. I have a set of 12" calipers that works very well for this.

thanks for your help guys. I spoke to Terry Maton himself today. He recommended that I go with a series 5 pushrod since I plan on using nitrous down the line. If I had no plans of nitrous he would have recommended a cheaper alternative. He recommends a 503 pushrod. 3/8" x .095 wall (4140 chromoly tubing heat treated to 275,000 psi tensile strength) with 5/16" ball end, standard oil hole, 7.850 length. Cost is $15 per pushrod, which puts me over the $200 budget by $40, but I know I am getting a good pushrod. Should be shipped out by the end of the week.

can someone tell me why is it that every time I set a budget for something I can never seem to stay under that dollar amount? lol... this motor is costing me a fortune and all I can hope is that it puts down some decent numbers.

I had an in-depth discussion with Trend and both of the Mantons at PRI last month. Previously I did the same with the Smith Bros. All three get a strong "thumbs up" from me. They don't all manufacture things exactly the same way, but I'd use any of the three.

It can't be emphasized enough how important pushrods are to a high rpm, high lift valvetrain.

FWIW, I believe some Top Fuel engines use 1/2 inch pushrods...solid, not tubular! How about making the intake rocker the "weak" link in the TF engine so that if it hydraulics the intake rocker breaks to prevent more nitro from filling the cylinder, coming out the exhaust and then gernading the engine? TF/FC is a whole other world of engine building. It has been said that the Laws of Physics are the same everyplace in the universe...except in a TF engine!

yeah I am sure all 3 are a worthy manufacture, but I just picked one. For me its not worth trying to pick one or the other and reinvent the wheel here. I just picked on who was recommended more than once and made a phone call.

My motor wont be super high rpm but it will probably hit the 7000 rpm limit of the stock ecm and still want to keep going. So its no street motor either. 12.4:1 compression with a domed piston in a 355. Lots of cyl head, big solid roller, shaft mount rockers... its just not worth cheaping out on any part of this build up. I think I went wrong when I decided to buy a forged short block
