but which is cheaper?

buying a 2-bolt block & splaying it to 4-bolt

or

buying a 4-bolt block & running main studs

Cheaper?

Buying the 4-bolt and using main studs. Really comes down to the deal you get on the block though.

Overall I think buying a 4 main block is cheaper than getting a 2 bolt block splayed.

i realize that it will vary, but what is the price range on a 2-bolt block & 4-bolt block? a local machine shop has a short block assembly for sale that has 4-bolt mains $500. i hope that the stock crank/rods/pistons/cam have some value to offset the original cost.
