I keep burning up alternates help

I keep burning up alternates in my 89 after doing an lt1 swap I have a 12v switched on the F terminal. I am on my fifth alt. I put the meatier on my 95 firebird and there is a 0.5 volt difference from the bat and the alt wire so there is a restore in there or some thing I tryed a 470 ome 2 % restore but the volts did not change is there some thing that is missing thanks

A 4th gen alt has no F terminal. What alt are you using?

I used a 95 f-body harness in the 89 and both connectors have a P,L,F,S on the side as well as the alt. The wire is on the F on both cars. I got the alt from autozone for a 95 camaro and it looks identical to the one I pulled off the motor.

Where did you add a "470 ome 2 % restore" (470 ohm 2% resistor) in the charging circuit? Did you inspect the wire for damage and corrosion? Adding a resistor will reduce the voltage, not increase it.

The wire should be on the "L" terminal and using the 470 ohm resistor (seems to work for everyone else). Though there may be left over "F" designations on the plugs, there actually is no F terminal used. The terminals are P, L, I, S.

you need resistance on the exciter wire. I kept running through alts too until i wired up an idiot light.

It sounded like he was trying to put a resistor in the red wire direct from the battery to the alternator.

I ran into something similar on a race car......kept burning up self exciters.

Do exactly as shbox says and it should be fine. The voltage to the exciter being wrong or switched at the wrong time while the alt is turning will kill the regulator instantly....

Its very hard to understand your original post, because of the lack of punctuation and the problems with the spelling. I recognize you may have some limitations that keep you from typing accurately, and I don't find fault with that. But you have to understand that when you don't provide a clear post to begin with, it limits people's ability to help you. It was an attempt to help. Sorry I offended you.

What I’m trying to do is find a way to wire it as the factory did. The research I did shows that I need to wire using the "L" terminal as shoebox recommended But that did not work the "L" terminal is for the light so that burnt up my alt. using the "F" or "I" terminal whatever you want to call it, it did not work because the voltage was the same as the alt was putting out so I lost diode that way. When I went to my 95 just with a quick test the alt is wired on the "F" terminal on a switched source, but when I tested the voltage at the bat and on the "F" terminal there was a .8 difference in voltage. Which means at the bat 12.3 at the plug on the back of the alt on the "F" terminal the voltage is at 11.5 so that tells me there needs to be some thing on that wire that will reduces the voltage. So that is where I am at looking for some thing reduce the voltage . Thanks Tyler

Not offended at all, but it might surprise you I have never pasted any writing class

Well, the factory wires the L terminal through a 470 resistor to the volt gauge. I don't know what else to tell you. Supposedly you can run unresisted 12v to the I terminal and it will work, too. This is info right out of the factory manual.
