http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AFR-S...spagenameZWD1V

Could I use these on my 396 LT1 build instead of AI heads or LE3's? This makes no sense at all.

Compare the flow numbers ported and see. Get biggest flow numbers at every lift not just peak #.
330CFM will make roughly 675FWHP
Then consider TOTAL price.
IMO it will take much more head than either to make a 396CID preform to the max.

It seems like I would be saving a bunch of money and time getting these AFR heads.

If your budget is between 2/2500 just for heads and not intake, rockers or v covers, PM me.

You do realize that those are bare UNPORTED castings? You would have to add the price of all the hardware AND porting...Not much of a deal. They would be great heads when finished.

So the chart that has them flowing at 292cfm @ 600 lift is not unported?

How much would the valvetrain cost me?

Those two charts are showing their street porting and their competition porting.Good valvetrain parts are not cheap.

Check out the bore size they are using, and a pipe. Numbers might be a tad optimistic.

So if I am using a 4.030 bore, how much different would it be?

From what I'm learning optimistic - agreed.
1racerdude might have something - but LE2/3 for 2500 will be ready to bolt on AND really flow well to make power.
heads 800
porting 500
valves 200?
springs 150?
retainers 100?
valve job/assembly 300?
total = 2050 as a loose guesstimate.

I'm looking too, and sending my stock LT4 heads to Loyd and leaving the 2.0" intake valves still will be 1300 + matching the intake manifold = 1500
better deal in my case....upgrading to 2.08 valves and related labor = 1800ish - and in his phone opinin - worth ~10rwhp
that's using my heads and intake.

That's a good price. But you may be surprised at how muc more you have to spend to get them ready to go. Mid season I spent ~$1,500 for a set of bare heads. Parts nearly doubles that and milling and porting adds another $7-800. With good components and porting you will be looking at at least $2,500. but for $800 they are a good starting point.

I would talk to whoever is going to be doing the porting. I was looking into starting with a bare set of AFR's and a couple different shops told me to avoid doing this along with AFR as they have some casting issues and until the head is machined they can't tell if the casting is even good.

Just a little FYI.

I am just going to wait until someone wants to sell some LE3's for a good deal. I have been seeing some go for less than $1000 with valve train, but I'm always too late.
