I drove her with no Y-pipe!!!!
If you don't want to read the questions at the bottom:
about 9:30 this morning I go over to the military auto hobby shop to do some work on the Z. I changed the tranny fluid first. Then it was off to the shatty exhaust manifolds to do the gaskets (freakin PITA) I just found it to be easier to remove the y-pipe. Plus I was/still going to, gut my CAT. So I get the driver's side which wasn't too hard. Then I get a brilliant idea to remove the useless heat shield and sandblast it to see what it would look like. Actually looked pretty good. But I got way too carried away lost track of time (its about 2:30ish shop closes at 4:30) I decided that since the first one took only like an hour and half or so to go ahead and do the other one. Big mistake two hours later and a y-pipe and 2 bolts short (gasket bolts) I get kicked out for closing.
I had no choice but to drive it home about 1.5 miles. Needless to say it was LOUD!!! Kinda sounded cool. But I never let it get over about 1500 rpms the whole time I was afraid of what it might do to the engine. My question is....One oxygen sensor is plugged into the y-pipe so that one wasn't there and no back pressure at all. Why did my computer not throw an SES light? I know it works cause the SES comes on when I disconnect my MAF and run it. Do you think I caused any harm to my engine. I'm gonna pull the half done manifold gasket and replace it. What do you think any damage?

figure avg egt's are about 700*c or so.. right? per side? maybe.. its pretty damned hot.. i'd say take it easy on the way back over there.. nothing is controlling where all that hot exhaust goes..
just be careful.. Sounds cool though don't it?

well....if I had an extra $600 bucks for headers then I would have, but I didn't so $23.54 for gaskets will have to do for now. Actually its gonna be $47.08 now, Don't worry I'm puttin some headers on soon. I'm getting ready to go home on leave. Its about a 1,100 mile trip each way, so I wanted to replace the gaskets and completely seal the engine's air leaks (if any), so I can get a good idea of the gas mileage on the highway. It should be pretty good since its an M6
By the way, I'll get on my baby tomorrow and be sure to post the outcome.

When we were working on mine, my friend and I took it out for a spin or 2 and gutted the b*tch. Quite loud, but everyone needs a NASCAR experience in their life. We had to try out the new line lock and my MAC ORP had not arrived yet (BTW I did have the y-pipe on, just not anything connecting it to the exhaust).
PS: I have MAC headers 2.

yeah it can be very time consuming when you're got people hovering over you asking, "How much horsepower does it make?" It makes me feel quilty to think that my baby's almost bone stock

I know how it feels to be pressed for time in those military things..
Dont be scared, you gotta hear that thing scream off the rev limiter and slam second, come on man do it for me!!!
