Unhappy I could really use your help

Hey guys,
Well, a couple of weeks ago I totaled my 97 Z28. The long and short of it is that I hydroplaned and my car landed in a ditch going in head first at roughly 35-40mph ( I didnt check the speedo, I just held on for dear life). I posted the details in the Kill Section. I felt it was appropriate & as a reminder for all to be safe out there.

The insurance co. totaled it because of the cost of repair but its not considered a salvage by DMV standards so I bought the car back from the ins. co. in the hopes of fixing it up.

It really doesnt look too bad, but I have not been able to get it to a body shop or a mechanic to check it out. I know that the oil pan is dented as well as the trans pan and it has some visible suspension damage.

After the tow truck pulled it out, I tried to start the car and it started as soon as I turned the key but it didnt sound right so I shut it down.

What type of damage would a motor, trans, rear end receive if the car is going along and all of a sudden everything comes to a sudden stop? When I went into the ditch the first thing I noiced was that the motor was not running.

What could I do to check for internal engine damage at this point?

Also, in the appraiser's estimate of the front suspension there is mention of a "suspension crossmember". Im thinking this is the k member. Im not so sure. If it is, would you get a stock replacement or go aftermarket with say for example a BMR tubular piece?

If you got this far, I want to thank you for reading and I definitely would appreciate any help or advice you could give.

Kind of hard to know where to start, since it seems as though you haven't even looked at it yet. But engine damage per se would be unlikely to occur from an accident as you are describing. It is common for accessories on the front of the motor to be damaged, however. Stuff like the radiator, pullies, etc.

Good luck.
