Hydraulic cams and Solid cams....What is the difference?
Re: Hydraulic cams and Solid cams....What is the difference?
Solid roller lifter has no hydraulic piston in the lifter body. With a HR, the slack in the vlavetrain is taken up by movement of the hyraulic piston , so after initial setup there is no valve adjustment needed. With a SR, the valve train is set up with a small amount of "slack", often called lash. On the order of 0.015-0.025". Most of this is taken up when the motor reaches operating temperature.
Solid roller offers more hp potential for a number of reasons. It can rev higher - greater spring pressures can be used and there is no problem with high rpm lifter "pump up". With greater spring pressure, steeper cam lobes with more lift can be used. SR parts are really not more expensive than equal quality HR parts. So, why do very few people use them? Well, a HR is "good enough". You can get 7,000rpm plus out of a good HR valvetrain and more lift/steeper ramps than are of much use on a street motor. No valve adjustments are needed, they are quieter, and no one has really solved the low rpm oiling issues with SR lifters. Prolonged idling/low speed use can result in SR lifter failure and catastrophic engine damage.

So these terms only refer to the lifters and not the cam it self.
So when I hear people refer to a solid cam they are really referring to the lifters.
Is that correct?
Yes google is my friend, but others may be interested in being educated on the topic and they will have visibility to these responses, that is what the forum is for.
