Hub install

Did a search and couldn't find the answer I needed. First, I have removed the hub and balancer on a 96 LT1. We are reinstalling it and have come across a couple things.

I have read and want to verify that it doesn't matter how you put the hub back on, that it isn't necessary to align TDC to install it.

Second, is there supposed to be a key or something that goes in the notch on the crankshaft? We have a key that we thought goes in to the notch, but it won't go back in flush. The hub won't go on with it like it is because there is no notch on the hub itself. So we are at a loss right now.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The stock hub is not keyed and there should be no key in the outer part of the crank snout. It is best to line the hub back like stock (to 1 or 6 TDC), but it is not absolutely necessary in most cases.

Thanks shoebox. After some calls to a couple buddies, we discovered that no key was necessary on the crank. My only concern now is why I found a key when we were cleaning up if the crank doesn't have one.

Is there anyhing else on the LT1 that would require a key?

The crank gear requires a cut-back key in the rear slot on the crank.

Thanks for the diagram. The key we found is not the key in the diagram. There is no cutback in the key we found. It is flat all along the top. Unless there is some other key somewhere, maybe the one we found doesn't belong on my motor.

If you don't have a keyed hub, the straight key does not belong.

As shbx pointed out to me a while back. when you install the hub please use a threaded rod, I have been using a longer bolt, it will work but each time it weakens the threads, When using the rod it will put the stress on it, not the crank.
