HP with hotcam
HP with hotcam
Considering a HOTCAM for my daily driver. What kind of RWHP can i expect from that, a good tune, longtubes, catback, and K&N with 3.23 gears? Are you satisfied with it? I would like bigger, but dont want to get into stalls and whatnot now, only 17 and dont need lots to go wrong. My dad also doesnt think a big cam is a good idea, so considering the kit from Summit.
Re: HP with hotcam
Hotcam kit would bring you up to about 300 rwhp if you dont' have any other mods. Throw in headers and get another 10-15 out of it. Don't expect to much, my friend has it with the same mods as me but he has 2.73 gears while I have 3.23 and I can pull on him. personally I'd go with a cc305. Its a little bigger.
Re: HP with hotcam
Anywhere from 315-330 with an auto on avg.
I run a H/C and I love it, I currently am running a stock converter wit 3.42's and it will blow the tires off from a 20mph roll throught the 2nd to 3rd shift
Also have gotten a 108.92 trap out of it and i am running shortys and 1.5 stamped steel rockers

Re: HP with hotcam
So on average I can figure 320ish at the Rear wheels with headers and cam and whatnot? Also would be using 1.6RR. I dont want a big cam, and I dont think my dad will let me. Wants me to be able to drive it everyday being reliable. And I showed him the kit and he likes how I can buy everything together that I will need, rather than piece it together. So i should be able to mash the gas at 20 and light them up? Will be upgrading to 3.73's within the next year or so. Also might get a stall for next christmas if I can talk my dad into it. The hotcam chops pretty good doesnt it? Any chance i will be able to give an LS1 a run? Also, I noticed how people still have great lowend grunt, compared to having it higher in the RPM range. Doesnt the CC305 make all the power up top? Are you happy with your hotcam?
Re: HP with hotcam
I did 32x/32x at the wheels with my HOT cammed 96 WS6 back in 98 or so. That was with SLP shorties and stock dual cats still hooked up. Matter of fact, all emission stuff was still hooked up. You should easily do that with long tubes and no cats.
My car ran a best of 12.4@111 on Nittos. It was a 6spd car with 4.10 gears. Here's a little page on that car.

Re: HP with hotcam
You completely stuck on getting the cam? Honestly, your automatic would benefit a lot better with a nice stall converter (Vig 2800), some headers, and Nitto DR's than the Hotcam and some headers.
You'll gain more at the track and I honestly think you'll find your A4 more fun on the street too. Not to mention your car will be more reliable that way as well and won't have to deal with the tuning issues of the Hotcam in your auto...
3.73's with a stock stall would help, but you'll still lose a little of that low-end grunt of the stock cam as compared to the Hotcam set-up. Having more horsepower is nice, but keep in mind that if it takes your car longer to get to that "newer/higher" powerband, it kind of defeats the purpose and you'll have a car that feels like a dog down low or around town. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have it the other way on the streets. Not to mention you'll still run better ET's at the track with a stall/headers/DR's then the Hotcam/headers/DR's...
So my recommendation is don't do the cam (any cam for that matter) until you at least go with a bigger torque converter first to take advantage of the different powerband of your car once you change camshafts...

Either way though, I know for a fact that he'll gain more with a nice aftermarket stall/header set-up than a Hotcam/header package (using stock stall) in his A4 on the streets or at the track. At which point, he could then add the cam of his choice to better compliment his set-up for daily-driving and some strip duty...
Re: HP with hotcam
From what I have read, crane's rocker in the kit (1.6) come close to coil bind. I believe it is somewhere around .020". I have also read that, Comp Cams "Pro Magnum" steel rockers are stiffer and will provide about 300 more RPM than aluminum which makes them a better choice for LT1 motors. It seems that the Comp cam rocker is the #1 choise on the board. As far as I can see, going with either cam will make about the as #ers. Both will need a good tune to make #ers you are hoping for.
You might save some green, by buying these parts use from this board. Most of the guys here are easy to deal with..
Just my .02 worth,

Re: HP with hotcam
Seeing as how your car has 28k miles on it, I say leave it the F alone. Buy a stall (maybe) and load yourself up on suspension !
Horsepower does NOT make quick cars. A proper combination makes quick cars. My friends LS-1 is bone stock with all suspension work done, stall. He knocks very hard on the 11 second door with a paper filter in there.

Re: HP with hotcam
If I were to buy a stall, i would buy a huge cam then. Im thinking hotcam because then I wouldnt need a 2800 stall and lose MPG. I know i will suffer some from a cam, but not as bad as a stall. I dont think i will ever go to the track, just f around on the streets with buddies. I have headers on the way from christmas. Now looking what to do next. As with suspension maybe, what should i look for there? I just bought new tires for my Z06 wheels. I want cam for the nice sound, and good power the hotcam seems to have. I will also be getting a dynotune if I get a cam. Also, what comp rockers are you talking about? I should sell the ones with the kit, and put in some comp ones? also, why would a stall be funner on the street? how much off a 1/4 does it shave off? wont get DR's.
