I remember reading a while back that if you're car came with 2.73 gears you could only go up so high stock? what is the limit?

If your car comes with 2.73 gears then you need to buy gears for 2 series carrier think they go to 3.73 but not sure or you buy a 3 series carrier from like slp for around 100 US and then you can install 3 series gears.

I plan on 3.42 on my 2.73 vert with a nice 2800 stall.Stall can give more performance gain than just about anything else but better gear are nice too. I agree with whats been said get your catback and cold air first and then you can tweak it with little things like maybe a pulley or 1.6 rocker setup if you don't want to get into heads and cam.Headers work good too some makes will increase noise, not be legal in your area and reduce ground clearance though.I just took them off my 99 for some of the above reasons.

I also know lots of ls1s seem much faster than lt1s stock for stock on the board but not sure but my ls1 isn't that much faster than my lt1 on street tires anyway.Maybe just from more spin. But my ls1 only gets around mid 13s and my lt1 has hit a high 13.

Ls1 has cam and most other bolt ons except for headers and heads.Lt1 is very very lightly modded with just cold air,tb airfoil,1le bellows,160 stat, hpp tuning out,gms maf, holley filter.Thats about it.Not even exhaust yet.

Ls1 is a m6 and lt1 is an auto. Heck if you put nitto drag radials on a stock lt1 and had the ls1 on street tires likely they would run about the same.

what would be a good set of emissions friendly headers and how much hp from them? are they hard to install?

mac headers are a good buy, i'm pleased with them. minimal ground clearance loss and all emissions hookups.
you could also skip on the catback and install a cutout somewhere.
theres some free mods you can do, such as the throttle body bypass. you can also try removing the spare tire and jack from the rear, that has to be around 30-40 lbs.
A madz28 or pcmforless tune is also a good performance for the dollar mod.

the combination of mac headers, highflow cat, slp loudmouth catback, slp cold air intake, removing spare tire/jack, madz28 tune, basic tuneup (plugs and wires), and going from 2.73s to 3.73s dropped my E.T. by nearly a full second and added 9mph in the 1/4.

CAI, cat-back, headers, 3.73 gears, torque converter, and tune.

I think that'd be a good place to start

What do you guys say? 13's? Maybe low 13's?

Steve
