Howling gears when decelerating...

Hey guys.. just had my 3.23's replaced with a set of Strange 3.73's. All bearings and seals were replaced...

The person who did them for me had great references from quite a few people who were happy with the work.

The gears are quiet as hell when just cruising and accelerating.. I'd venture to say quieter than stock. It's decelerating that bothers me... it makes an almost whirring howling sound.. not very loud.. but I hear it, and I'm not sure if something is "wrong" or not...

When I drove it the first time it was bothering me alot so my installer was cool enough to open the rear and disassemble everything and check the wear pattern from the mile or two it had been driven. The pattern was right on the money and everything seemed right. He did change the backlash from .006 to around .008 instead, that did quiet the gears down a good bit. Now the only real issue is.. are the gears going to be fine with that whirring howling sound when decelerating? I'm not sure if it's me imagining it.. but it almost feels as though the car has more "load" when I'm off the gas letting the car slow down.. almost as though it's bucking a bit.. I can't tell if this was something it had before or not.

I just want to make sure this rear won't freakin' blow up on me first pass out.

I would'nt worry about it, espically if its only on decel. and he had checked it again after it had been driven. My richmonds are pretty loud all the time and seems to be the worse at cursing speed of about 65ish when on flat land w/cruise on.......and slight noise on decel as well.

Mine had a faint noise that I could only hear because I was listening for it. It got quiter after the break in of 500miles and then a couple weeks later gone completly.

The Strange 3.73s in my friend Matt's 12 bolt howl like crazy at cruising and decelleration. It sounds like a UFO hovering, lol. Honestly, we had it checked by a few places and we were told this was normal, and to be expected of Strange gears.

Did you see the recent post of a guy that had Strange 3.73s put in? He reported perfectly quiet. That is the way they should be.

Yep, sure did.. as a matter of fact he's local to me and they were installed by the same person. His do the *exact* same thing as mine.. howl only on decel.. but perfectly quiet when accelerating and cruising.

Curious to see what other Strange 3.73 owners have to say. Like I said.. if the gears won't be hurt by the noise, I don't care. Honestly I hear every little thing in the car right now as I don't have the back panels in the trunk in at the moment.

Sorry, I did not see him say that they howled on decel. His post on ProjectTransAm said "There is NO whine whatsoever...."

Thumbs up

just another situation of gears

I had strange 3.42 put in my car, they had a little whine when there is a load on them ( in drive or reverse), but when i let off the gas they are as quite as stock, I also had my installer check them out and they were right on the money.

I guess when you replace gears its a crap shot weather it be quite as your stock rear end, but the main point is that there will be long trem damage on the rear end.

It's all good.. I'm assuming you're talking about username Cmr0z28 right? If so I did not see him mention that in his original post.. he mentioned it to me when we spoke on IM.

They were quiet, and after I put about 100 miles or so on them I have the same thing he has. Not worrying about it though, sounds normal to me.

I had Strange 3.73's installed back in July. They've been howling since day one especially on decel. I've always been told this is normal when installing a 3.73 gear ratio or higher. The guy that did my rear has been doing it for years; all the local camaro/mustang guys go to him for their setup. I've even watched him do the job and he showed me what he was doing step by step. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Anytime you make a gear jump like that you have to expect a little added noise. Some brands (Richmond) will be louder then others, its just a minor drawback to putting in performance gears. I wouldnt worry about them at all, a little noise is perfectly normal.

On my 93 T/A (sold) I put the richmond 3.73 gears in, they were sthe same quiet accelerating but humm and whirred on decel, there was a slight faint hum (exhaust did cover it up though) at cruising speeds of around 70 or greater. But they lasted for a good 6 years with no problems, I even had the nut back off once, we jsut retightend the nut and scored the threads, it lasted a few more years after that.
I dont think I would mess with it, if he got in there and did some more it may make them louder. It may also quieten up a bit after they have a few hundred miles on em.
