How weak are our auto trannies??

I know one guy with caprice and for some reason he went thru like two trannies in a few months.

I am wondering if I stick to just bolt ons with my lt1.no headers,no cam ,no heads possibly some rockers and the other bolt ons like catback, cold air,etc will the auto trans stand up to a 2800 stall and possbily a 100 to 125 shot of spray.I would buy a spray compatible stall converter likely vigilante one.

I don't want to be putting in trannies every week.I don't want to go to the expense of buying high strength trannies.I can limit the car to a 100 shot if that helps.I assume 150 shot is pushing it with hypercrap factory pistons.

I think 125 to 150 is probibly the celing on factory pistons but ive seen it done.

As for the tranny Ive got heads and a cam on a 383 with a slew of bolt ons and a yank 3500 on a stock trans. 6k miles on the new motor and no problems.

The tranny is more of a hit or miss deal. You've got a good one or you don't... Some people have never had problems, yet others have A LOT. Though I think the reason why people that have had problems in the past continue to have them is that there's not that many people that are competent enough to work on the 4L60E trannies. It's not something I'd take down to the local repair shop to get fixed. I've never had any problems with mine, but when/if I do, I'm sending it off to get rebuilt and strengthened at the same time.

If you're looking for some insurance on that tranny, an aftermarket cooler would go a long way, since most of the time, the tranny dies of heat failure. An auto can handle a lot of torque, but the continued friction of a higher than stock stall combined with hard shifts can destroy bands in a short matter of time, especially in hot weather. However, if you have a manual fan switch or reprogrammed your fans to come on sooner, that could offer some benefits as well, it will be keeping the tranny cooler as well.

The best thing to do is modify your car and just do the basic maintenance on your tranny, and put some cash on hold somewhere. That way when it does break you can send it to where you want instead of getting a cheapo job done.

I know someone on here has the link to the place that offers high performance transmission rebuilds with packages specifically for the 4L60E.
