Question How to tell if a lifter is collapsed when it is out of the car

Same friends car we had problems before- a little ticking noise from valvetrain after the engine warms up.Rockers were reajusted, so they fine. Looks like it may be a collapsed lifter. I still have my old set of stockers that were good before removal, so we just gona put them in. By the way, at gmpartsdirect stock lifters cost $23 a piece, not $23 for eight.

I was wondering if there is a way to tell if a lifter is collapsed when it is out of a car? Also is there a way to check cam lobes when lifters are out through lifter valley?
We bought used EX 224/230 that had a little surface rust on cam lifter lobes(posted before if it was OK to use it) We polished the lobes good, could not even feel with a nail a scratch; However, there still could be a possibility of a bad cam lobe. Could we see lobes with intake off and lifters out?

ttt I know there are some cheap guys who just replaced a single lifter on this board. Is there any way to tell if a lifter is collapsed/damaged when it is out of the car. What should I be looking in used lifters when inspecting them

I went to Napa and bought a 1 new one. I couldn't tell if it was collapsed not by visualing inspecting it.

Was it obvious which one was damaged when you took it out of the car? Like damaged roller surface or something else?
