How sturdy are OE roller lifters?
How sturdy are OE roller lifters?
Here's my problem. I've got an LT1 with 130K. It's got the classic slow-to-pump-up lifter. Ticks only when the engine is really cold and idling. If this were a flat tappet engine, I'd re-adjust it and have no durability concerns with the lifter. However, I don't have much experience running high mile roller lifters. I'm concerned that the roller itself may be damaged from the impact of the tick, and readjusting might not be the right thing to do. I'd hate for the roller to fail and wipe the camshaft out- or spread the breakage due to loose metal chunks. I'd really like to hear anybody's experience with these at high miles and how they survive a re-adjustment. Thanks!!

Just a thought, but if the ticking goes away after it runs for a bit, I'd say that they're just getting old and not pumping up fast enough. If they never stopped ticking, I'd suggest adjusting them, but if not, leave it alone untill you decide to get new ones. I'm no professional, but that's what I'd do.

The stock lifters are pretty tough, actually I believe that the basic roller lifters sold by Crane and Comp are the exact same thing(the Comp "R"s being different). I would depending on the mods and history of the car look at readjusting and maybe trying to clean the oiling system. http://www.auto-rx.com/pages/applications.htm this is a good product, takes some time to work it's magic though. One of my LT1 had 173K on it when I started treatment with this stuff and it has smoothed out and picked up a little compression, was never low to begin went from a hair under 190 to 195-200psi.

The stockers have lasted 10 years and countless 11 second 1/4 mile passes as well as 40,000 street miles with no problems...Just freshening the top end and going with a much bigger cam from Joe Overton and going with a new set of stock replacements for good measure...I think they are plenty durable...
