How Strong are LT1 Connecting Rods??
Re: How Strong are LT1 Connecting Rods??
the stock LT1 PM(powdered metal) rods are as strong, if not slightly stronger then the old "pink" rods
I have a set of PM rods in a 450 FWHP motor and have no worrys at all

Re: How Strong are LT1 Connecting Rods??
The two cases of connecting rod failure that I have seen documented, at least for the LT1 PM rods, occured at approx 600HP. The factory rates them at 450HP, and claimed that was an upgrade from the "pinks". The LT1 engines were switched to the PM's during 1994 (Corvettes) and 1995 (F-bodys), from what I have read.
Re: How Strong are LT1 Connecting Rods??
The early '70s LT-1 used "pink" rods I think that is the source of confusion. Those were for years the best factory rods, till the LT1(notice no "-") came around with the powdered metal rods. These are capable of handling a lot of power, a couple of 10second b-bodies use them think about the power it takes to get one of those whales into the 10s.

Mine have held up to >520rwhp ~ 600rwtq w/out issue. Even melted a Forged TRW piston one time ~ had the rods checked, and put them back in my car. Stock crank too.

I always thought the connecting rods were on the weak side on the LT1, I guess I was wrong. So I'm assuming the weak point on the bottom end is the pistons?

For nitrous or a head/cam package the cast pistons are adequate, they become the weak point when you start looking at supercharging or turbocharging. Anyways, a set of ARP bolts will definately help.
