How restrictive are cats?

Well I'm debating whether to go with two cutouts in my y-pipe before my cat(s) (I have to have cats on for emissions) or one cut out after my cat(s) but I don't know how restrictive they are..

Bottom line is I want to be really loud and really free flowing. Whats the best thing to do?

btw I put "cat(s)" because I don't know whether I'm going to use two in my y-pipe or just one where the ypipe converges. Any advice on that either? Thanks

>Are you talking about the stock Y pipe with the cats or are you using an aftermarket Y pipe ?

you also have O2 sensors possibile after the Y pipe . 3 total on the 96 and up (I believe) .
I have http://www.randomtechnology.com catalyst converter and it flows real nice , but I like the noise level down too , so no cut-outs for me .

Cats, especially "high flow" varieties, are not a singnificant restriction compared to the rest of the exhaust system that is downstream of the Y pipe. As proof of the pudding, I am making 876rwhp through dual high-flow Random Tech cats. But I would still put the cutout(s) in front of the cats. Any exhaust tubing is restrictive to a point, and the more of it you bypass, the better.

As to why you want it that loud, I wonder have you ever ridden in a car with open exhausts? Ouch! Of course, cutouts are good for track use where with a helmet and all the noise doesn't matter much.

Good point. But I was assuming track only use. O2's are ignored in PE mode.

Well I would be using electric cut outs.. so I can open to whatever amount I desire, correct? So if I think wide open is too loud I can always quiet it down. And when I'm at the track well then I wouldn't care lol

I will be using most likely a custom y-pipe because I'm getting Jet-Hot LTs... and I don't know of any aftermarket y-pipe that allows cats. And I would have them weld in the cut-outs as well.

But about this 3rd O2 sensor after the y-pipe... I've never even heard of this... what can I do to get around that? Thanks
