how to remove dipstick tube for header install?

hey im getting ready to get the last bolt off the passenger side manifold and noticed it is necessary to remove the dipstick tube to get the new headers on. how do i do this? if someone can give me a step by step procedure on how to do it, it'd be real helpful. i did a quick search and nothing turned up. thanks guys

There is a single bolt through a small "tab" welded to the dipstick tube. That tab bolts to the block, above the point where the tube inserts into the hole in the block. Remove the bolt and pull the tube straight up.

Don't count on it going back together so easy. Freezing the tube, and lubing it up well before trying to insert it will help.

An easy way to get the dipstick tube back in after the header install is to take a file and slightly round the edges. It will make fitting the tube back into the hole much easier.

I wrecked mine putting it back in... it developed a HELL of an oil leak around the dipstick... I'm putting a Lokar unit in this winter...

Id suggest that you go and get a new dipstick just to have. Odds are you will trash to old one getting it out. Also depending on what headers you go with you will have to do some slight bending to get it to fit properly.

can i just bend my stock unit? if i bend it, will it not read accurately? i cant get the pass side o2 sensor off and its hitting on the dipstick tube when i try to remove the pass manifold, if i bend the stock dipstick tube, will it have a permanently bad effect on the block/ oil readings? will i be able to reuse it if it is bent?

If you keep twisting and pulling it will come out. You can bend it and it won't make any difference how it reads, Just make sure it is seated when you are done.
