Hey guys I have a problem on my 68 chevelle. I have been trying and trying to remove the oil filter off of it and it seems to be jammed on there pretty good. I used an oil filter removal ratchet and it didnt work, so I was told to use a long shafted screwdriver and jam it in one side of the filter to get leverage on it. That only resulted in a shredded oil filter. The darn thing is stuck and in shards, now im wondering where to go with it. Would it be feasible to cut the filter off? Im sure someone has been in the situation before, or at least I hope. Thanks for any help in advance-

 

I would try to get a pair of vice grips on it where you have already made the holes/tears.

 

yea, vice grips sound good, maybe a C Clamp on the whole thing

if uve got them get vice grips big enough for the whole thing, but most people dont have a pair that big

 

I had to use a large pair of vice grips when a filter got stuck on my 85 Blazer. About 20 minutes of turning the filter about an 1/8th of an inch and lots of cussing and some sore hands, it finally came off. Have fun. The end result of the filter is truly amazing though, it's completely destroyed when you're done.

 

Not sure how demolished the filter is yet, but don't just put the screwdriver into the side, jam it COMPLETELY through the filter, you'll have better leverage that way. Good luck!

 

yea id let u use my breaker bar w/ the right size filter ratchet attacthment, ud for sure get it off then... hehe got myself a 48" breaker bar
i knew i had to get those tires off if i was gonna keep the weight of a spare in my trunk

 

Use a substantial screwdriver and a hammer and peck at an angle at the base, hammering in the direction of removal.

Yep....I atually used a drimel to cut a slot in the lip base for the screwdriver to get a bite on. BTW...if you have trouble in the future I reccommend the seatbelt style filter wrench...it has never failed me on any filter on any car.....sometimes it crushes the filter but it always gets it off.

 

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it. I will have plenty of ideas now to remove this thing. As for what type of oil filter it is, thats a good question. Im not sure, but the filter is all blue and my motor builder puts the same looking filter on everything. There isnt any label on it or anything. I cant wait to get my chevelle going, I only wonder which will be faster my camaro or my chevelle
