how the hells do i take the ac compressor out without removing the freaking engine? i can't get to/see anywhere where its mounted
Yeah, I'd like to know this myself as I need to replace my compressor. It looks like it might be advantageous to remove the alternator for better access (but I could be wrong), other than that, it looks like just a matter of getting beneath the car, removing the serpentine belt, and the bolts that hold the compressor in it's bracket (of course, after evacuating the freon and removing the lines off the back of the compressor). The Chiltons manual I have sucks. It doesn't really explain anything.
The only bolt that I know of that gives people trouble is the one at the back that bolts to the block and is hard to see/get to. I think it is easier after the pipes are removed from the back of the compressor. There is one bolt that holds them on.

The back bolts take a little patience. With headers I had to get them all from the bottom. On a stock manifold car I could not get at the one bolt Shoebox is talking about. Luckily I had a small 3/8 drive impact. It JUST fit into the crevace and I got it out. I had no room to turn the ratchet.
Whoa, removing the alternator... what?
You all are making this way too complicated.
I did this last week... Three front bolts you can reach with any good socket set and varying length extensions. I found it easiest to use them directly on the ratchet itself with no extension, but I used a deep socket. Keep changing extension/socket combinations.
The two back bolts were a real pain, but doable. I used a 1/2" 6 pt offset box end wrench and did the bolts one turn at a time. Time consuming, but nothing hard. Theres no way you're getting any kind of ratchet in there, the angle is impossible.
Once the compressor is free from all the bolts, drop the passenger side of the sway bar and wiggle it out. Don't forget to remove the electrical connection from the compressor.
EDIT: It helped to remove the tensioner, also, which is only two bolts.
