How much trouble can i get in for having a off road pipe?

I have a pretty messed up driving record and cant afford any more tickets. So i was wondering if i get caught would it be a citation, moving violation, or what?

I'm sure you would get cited + big fine. If I'm not mistaken removing your cat is a Federal offense even if you do not have emissions testing where you live.

The last time I was in the muffler shop, the sign on the wall said there was a fine of up to $2500 for tampering with, disabling, or removing the catalytic converter. Unless you are pushing mad amounts of power, it's not going to cost you much at all to have a good cat on your car.

They won't give you a moving violation, so your insurance shouldn't go up or anything. Even if you get pulled over, the cop isnt going to look underneath your car to see if you have a cat or not, unless its ungodly loud for some reason. But if you have a cat back exhaust and headers and no cat, I doubt anyone will care. Plus, the ticket is usually the kind where if you can fix it in 30 days, you don't have to pay, you just show up at court with your stock y-pipe in place and they see it, say OK, wave the ticket, and then you go home and install your other y-pipe.

Put a hollowed out cat in place of the OR pipe and call it a day. That will pass visuals.

Make that a hollowed out cat shell with a stright pipe through it so it doesn't sound like scrap

gutting the cat is overrated. if you're afraid of fines or there is the slightest possibility a sniffer will come thru at some point in your area, i'd say the 2 ponies aren't worth it... JMHO.

not only that

I think the rule is that you cant remove the cat and above that they have to be in the stock location. Hence everyone with longtubes is illegal, whether they have all the emissions hookups or not, the cats arent going to be in the factory location. so does this mean im going to have to go with shorty headers and highflow cats in the factory location, i guess if i wanna be legal. But what fun is being legal, especially if i have to miss out on the awesome sound of longtubes and a cutout! good luck with the ultimate decision of, stay legal or make serious power.

That's exactly what I've done with mine. Visually on the outside it's my "catalytic convertor", but on the inside I've jammed a straight-pipe (3") down it, welded up the seams and welded a 3-point flange on the forward end to match up to my y-pipe. If I was ever asked or got a citation for noise, I still have my GOOD cat. convertor in the garage that fits neatly in place of my straight-piped one.

what if a cop pulls you over and gives you a tickek for having an ORP. or not? My friend got pulled for one. and got a ticked for being too loud, but he has the loud mouth exhaust on. so that is kind of loud.
