Question How much power can I expect (MAF/PCM)

How much power should I expect to get from a nice aftermarket MAF sensor (name your choice) and a PCM tune?

I missed the opportunity to have Jeff Creech dyno-tune my car in February (transmission was heading south). I'll be going with a mail order tune; from MadZ28 of course. I'm not sure what MAF I'm going to get... Taking suggestions. The Granatelli is fugly as all hell, but it seems to be what most people are using.

Use the stocker.... get the tune and save that MAF money for something that will help you make power.

So an aftermarket MAF doesn't do a thing? Never heard that one before.

The stock MAF sensor is not a flow restriction on a bolt-on setup. The Granatelli MIGHT net you a few HP for a very high $$$$$ cost, but it does that by intentionally altering the high flow calibration to lean the engine out at WOT. You will be able to achieve the same thing, and in a much more reliable way by having the stock, overly rich, WOT target A/F ratio leaned out as part of your "tune". That nets you a quick 15HP, simply by altering the power enrichment (PE) tables. And a tune will cost you about 1/3 of what a Granatelli costs you.

Save your money.... spend it on the tune, not on a new MAF.

Hmmm, okay. So what do you suggest instead of the MAF?

Is that 15 rwhp off the tune?

some people see 15rwhp from a tune... depends on mods and how well the tune is done.

Agreed, i got just the tune from madz28 and it did wonders for me, of course i have a few other mods but either way the stock MAF is not restrictive

I went from losing to my brothers VR4 by 2 cars to beating it by 3, just gives u an idea of the power of the tune.

MadZ28.com gaurantees 13rwhp on a stock/bolt-on car.

You're in luck, Jeff Creech will be back in Southern California April 21 - 23; I highly recommend his tuning! As far as an aftermarket MAF; Jeff Creech recommends staying with the stock MAF for the reasons mentioned above.

Re: How much power can I expect (MAF/PCM)

Why dont we get some facts together about the limits of the stock MAF sensor. When does it become a restriction in a N/A application? What is the most power someone has made N/A with the factory MAF sensor? When you get to that limit, does a ported or descreened unit work (with a dyno tune)? Anyone using a Z06 MAF successfully on a motor with say 450 RWHP? I know on supercharged applications, guys have made quite a bit with the stock PCM and MAF. How much have some of those guys made?

Re: How much power can I expect (MAF/PCM)

I dont think I have seen an LT1 NA car make enough power to warrant the replacement of the stock piece. There are a few 450 rwhp cars making it through a stock MAF with ported ends. It's all about the tune at that point. I haven't seen a real conflict with stock MAFs and inconsistent air flow numbers on any of my scans of high horsepower LT1s.
