How much pan to pump pickup clearance?

How much space should I look for when checking my pan to oil pump pickup?
I am doing this with clay, and want to make sure to get it right.

I just put it up a lil higher than it looks like it should and then set the pan down on it w/o the gasket. that way when the gasket is there it will be around an 1/8". Thats how i've heard to do it and did it that way myself. but i'd also wait to see what the guru's say.

In my LT1 setup for road racing, Wayne Calvert ( www.waynecalvertengines.com ) used the stock "biscuit", leaving the rolled bottom edge about 1/8" off the bottom ot the pan. The screen is another 1/8-1/4" above that.

He brazed the tubing together and then brazed the tube to the pump. I'm using a Canton 242T pan.

I am also using the canton 242T. I have a 10% overdriven melling select, with a pickup to match the canton pan. I had somebody mention that 5/8ths was a good measurement with clay, but that seems too big of a gap between pickup and pan. My only deal is I do not want to get too close to the bottom.

I guess I will go with 1/4 inch and hope that is where I need to be.

With my stock volume pump and canton 242t pan the closest I could get it was 1/2" off the bottom. I would have liked to shoot for ~3/8" but all i could fit was 3 washers under the bolt on the pickup.
