How much much tranny noise is normal?

Well after my Mcleod single clutch install with now over 450miles on the clutch Ive noticed that I can hear more input shaft noise in neutral with the clutch engaged. This is inside the car Im talking about from the shifter area...Still sounds the same from the outside of the car as it did before.
Any help would be nice...By the way it has a Hurst billet + shifter and lou's short stick and of course fresh ATF.

As long as we're both talking about the same "engaged"....with the clutch pedal out....the noise could be either a pilot bearing, input shaft, or bearing noise from in the transmission. In the T56 though, there is some noise the GM says is "inherent in the design". If the clutch pedal is pressed in, the noise is most likely a throw-out bearing. Hope this helps!

Were talking about the same thing...I thought there was some "iherent" noise in the tranny design but I was just checking

Thanks,

I have noise also

I have the same problem on my 95.
But it also makes noise when I first take off (0 mph - 8 MPH).
Also only happens under light to moderate take off.

One tranny place said I need a new pilot shaft bearing another shop said I need a new throw out bearing.
I am thinking now that it is just regular noise?

Busted?

If it broke, would it have fallen out? If so, then I would probably be able to pull the inspection cover and see a piece of the spring laying in the bottom?
I am a bit worried that the noise is coming from a tranny bearing itself.

My 95 Z is noisy at low RPMs inside now that I have a short stick installed. It was quiet with the stock stick. If you look at the stock stick, it's got bushings that isolate the stick from the base, presumably to help with the noise from the tranny.

I picked up some rubber washers and a couple of other things from Lowe's the other day to try to fix it, without defeating the purpose of the short stick. I'll repost if it works.

I was told by a couple others M6 owners arround my way that my noise was normal.... It was quite inside untill I installed the Hurst billet plus and a short stick now it seems more pronounce inside the car but the outside noise sounds the same as before the new clutch, pressure plate, shifter, ect...............

Thansk for all the input,

Well i installed a slp clutch in mine. It sounds like something is rattleing around in mine. But when i press in the clutch it goes away. It came with a new throwout bearing, and i put in a new pilot bearing so i don't know what it is.

Throwout bearing, pilot bearing, or input shaft. Did the slp clutch, the noise was still there. When changing trannies, i compared them and noticed that the input shaft on the old one had very minimal movement, but could have been the source. If the noise is the infamous rattle in the LT1 drivetrain, i dont think its a safety issue as much as a comfort issue. Good luck...

Update

Since my car is new to me, I just noticed something.

The transmission noise does not happen in the early AM.
After about 5 minutes, it begins to make the noise when I take off at low speeds.

I would love to just say "oh well" and say it is normal noise of a T56.
But, I am afraid it is a bad input shaft bearing or something that may cause trouble later on.

Now what

The noise in my tranny seems to get worse each day. Now it makes the noise all the way until it hits 10mph.

Anyone know of a good T56 mechanic in Long Island NY?

I need this car for an everyday driver, so I want to fix it soon.
