how many people opt. to do the lifters with a cam install?

the other day i was reading an old GMHTP mag (the one w/Scott Abrino's 385 and Dalton's 12 sec n/a Z on the cover) and they were talking about how Abrino put a cc306 in his Z and ended up grinding a lobe off the cam b/c one of the lifters (STOCK mind you)failed. i was just wondering how long the stock lifters are good for, and how many of you change(d) them when swappin cams. it seems like it would be well worth it even if the car only has 50k on it, but mine approarching 100k i aint gonna chance it, who makes a good set of lifters for our cars, or will stock replacements suffice? thanx

Comp cams stock replacements work, but their "R" series lifters are the best lifter to use, and they're onlt $10-20 more then the stock lifters per set.

When I installed my cam I also installed Comp Cams "Comp R" lifters. The way I see it is that if you have your engine opened up that much, you might as well.

I'll be going with Comp R's this time around. If you're upgrading the valvetrain, why not do it right the first time?

Another vote for Comp R's. I only put a hotcam in my first stroker and it busted two stock lifters. Never did find all of the parts of the second one

I have always been under the impression that you never put used lifters on a new cam. Always buy new lifters for a new cam.

It's okay to reuse roller lifters providing there's no excessive wear unlike the flat tappet style. I opted to replace mine's at 60K miles even though they were in excellent shape.

i put in Comp lifters.......i wouldnt trust stock lifters, even if they had really low mileage.........they arent really designed to use on the more aggressive cams and high rpms people are turning now.........when everything is all apart, why skimp on something that is integral to the engine?

btw, my buddy swapped from used stock lifters to compR's on his heads/cam lt1 and picked up 12rwhp

To me it just isn't worth the risk to reuse stock lifters. I'd replace them with a cam swap. Comp makes good lifters.

Definitely with a flat tappet cam. With a roller, it is more a judgement call.

Hmmmm, I reused the stock ones.... They now have 136k on them, the last 11k being with the HOTcam. Haven't wiped any lobes off yet I don't think Replacing your lifters isn't a bad idea, I was just on a really tight budget.

I'm really wishing I had used the Comp R lifters. I had 98k on my engine and couldn't afford new lifters, so I reused the stock ones. Nothing bad has happened yet, but I am for sure yanking those out this summer when I am doing my heads. Comp Rs or Comp OE it is. Not sure which ones yet.

I agree, CCA-875-16 are the way to go. Unfortunatley they were unavailable at that time.
