How many are degreeing their cams when installing?

Just curious as I don't see hardly anyone mentioning this in regards to their installs.

I didn't degree my cc503 when I installed it, but looks like I'll be degreeing my LE2 cam upon install. Soooo that being said, how many have degree'd 'em during their installs?

Generally it is not necessary. If it came from a good builder it is more than likely OK.
I use Crower and have not checked one of there's in 15yrs but I know there work.If I get somebody elses I will check.

its a good thing to check you know the cam could be ok but what if the crank key is a **** hair off or when they cut the crank gear and the cam gear all those matter if you were close enough Javier id let you use what i have.Being with todays technology everything should be dead on but what about the guy that was hungover from the night before that made one of those parts??

I always do... sometimes they don't get them right. Kinda sucks but it's true.

I degreed the cam that came with my LE1 heads; found it 2 degrees retarded. I used a 2 degree offset crank key and that brought it in to 1 degree advanced, and that's the way I left it.

I got a custom Comp grind, and did not degree it. My guys at the machine shop said it wasn't necesary with my parts and setup.

fastz.. yah this seems to be a somewhat debated topic broken up about 50/50.. I didn't find much in a search.

Guess it's up to chance really. For $80 piece of mind tho.. after all I've spent *sigh*...

Isnt it great how it all piles up. Just when you think you had everything done, you always find more ways to dump cash. I'm finding this out on my H/C install, each time I'm like, its only $150 more, or its only $80 more. Its starting to add up quick

The only time you will know it wasn't necessary is after you do it

The question should be why wouldn't you degree the cam? If you are going to spend all the time it takes to do a cam swap or rebuild it makes sense to take the extra time for piece of mind. I don't know about you but I really don't like to tear things apart more than once.

Re: How many are degreeing their cams when installing?

Agreed, a few degrees does make a difference & I've seen as much as 6 degrees variance between the tolerances of the crank keyway, timing set & the camshaft. I've also checked many that were within 1 degree, but at least we knew.
You probrably can find someone to loan you a degree wheel & an indicator.
