how to make heater hotter
how to make heater hotter
my 95 has never blown very hot air during winter. i guess its a normal lt1... wants to get too hot during the summer and not hot enough in the winter. it never even touches 180 degrees in this winter weather. the air is always chilly feeling. back in march i put in a new 180 thermo and flushed the system. i let the car warm up for about 20 minutes and still blows cool. i get heat but not sufficient, everything seems to operate fine. what are my options here? up the thermostat temp?
Re: how to make heater hotter
Yeah a warmer thermostat is about it. It will make peak temp higher, although the warm air won't make it out any quicker when you start up. I run a 160 thermo in mine and it really sucked trying to get heat in the car today. The car didn't appreciate starting very much either (6 degrees out). Looks like if it hits -20 I'll be out there drizzling hot water over the battery.
Re: how to make heater hotter
what did you flush? the whole coolant system? or the heater core, if you flush the whole system and the heater core is cloged it probably wont do anything.
what you need to do is pull off both hoses that go to and from the heater core (not that easy) and with a hose realy flush it out in both directions afew times, do it until the water comes out clear, then switch the direction of the water and do it again and it will come out dirty again, then switch it back afew times until it just comes out clear every time.
it is a real big pita but after doing that the heater blows out hot as hell, the results acualy werent that imediate but after warming up the car with the heat on afew times afterwards it cleared out the system and works great. just be carefull not to break the hoses cuz they are very expencive i hear
there are two hoses for the heater core that come off the radiator... one goes in and one flows out, i dont remeber which one is which but i found it easyest to take the top one off of the radiator and then take the other one off from where it comes off the firewall because it is hard to get to on the radiator, i hooked up another hose i had laying around to it and ran it to my garden hose, and i also forced compressed air through it and that helped alot also be carefull not to get the batery/opti wet.
i think thats the most common problem with the heat on these cars is a cloged heater core. mine is 4 years old and it was cloged already, so if you already did flush the core id do it again, good luck!

Yea same thing in my car. Allways blowing cold air even when the car was running hot. I didnt think it was hard at all to disconnect thoes heater core hoses. Flushed it out and that was it. If i wasint pulling the motor i would do it again, hasint even been 8 months and its clogged up allready.
Re: how to make heater hotter
I am not saying do this, but when I lived in Chicago I had a Big Block Mopar with a 4 core radiator and used to have and slide a peice of cardboard in front of the radiator during the winter to help block air flow.

LT1's have heaters?
Thats what I said when winter hit last year (First winter with car) and my heater would not work. I had the local dealership flush and do a bunch of other things. After the second try they got it right. Right after that that thing got HOT in the car, to the point where on the lowest setting i had the windows open a crack! This winter its not as hot, but its comfy! Take the car back and tell them to do it again, run air through the lines and then the core both directions and it should get it. Mine sat for 6 1/2 years the crap that was gumming it up looked like leaves? Who knows...

Re: how to make heater hotter
These heaters only work if you have a high themostat in them. If you have a 160 or 180, you'll never get any heat out of them. Just enough to keep it above freezing, but won't be able to make it warm in the car. Mine with the 160, gets cold on some of those fall nights when i have it out--and it's not even below 40 then. I don't drive it in the winter so i don't know about absolute winter time. Yea it was 0 degrees F the other day here.

WRONG.
I have a 160* thermo and fans programmed to come on at 90/95c. I get HOT heater air. Motor just turned 130K.
All i've done is flushed the heater core, block, radiator. Normal maintenance.
Re: how to make heater hotter
Flush and reverse flush your heater core. Worked for me.

Re: how to make heater hotter
So i had the coolant flushed. Then my coolant sensor came on and i went back to the place and they filled the resivoir and the light went off. Then yesterday my heat wouldn't work and my service engine soon light came on. I took it back to the place and they scanned it and it says that I have a bad o2 sensor. Could these be related? Now, i have no heat and a service light.
Also, is it normal for the temp to fluctuate in these cars? When im driving around I sit at around 185 degrees but when i sit in traffic it jumps up above the half way point and then slowly moves back down to 185 (1/4 level).
Any ideas?
