How long should my car redline before shifting?

Ok...I have a 1995 Pontiac Trans Am with an Automatic Transmission and performance shift option.

Well i was just wondering how long it should redline before it normally shifts into a higher gear?

Even in normal mode and i get on it just a bit (about 80% or more throttle) the engine redlines for which seems like an eternity but probably just about 3-5 seconds. My car still accelerates while it redlines but im just wondering if it should stay redlined for that amount of time before it shifts.

Thanks

And if this sounds like a stupid question, im sorry. I never had a automatic car before. And the ones that i did drive werent sports cars.

The car should shift before hitting the rev limiter. What exactly do you mean by "redlining"? You mean the tach needle hits the redline or the motor is on the rev limiter?

depends on what gear... my car did that on the redline in 3rd gear...

but if its doing that in 1rst gear... u got a problem it should be maybe 1/4 of a second for both first and second.

u might wanna look into ur spark plugs see if those are due for replacements

Well...Actually it is about 5500 rpm or in the orange that it holds the gear. And it does do it in first and second gear.

Im not sure about 3rd gear....not enough road around here except for the highway.

I just replaced the spark plugs with bosch platinums and the wires.

I probably am just not giving it full throttle for it to be hitting red line.

I recently pulled about 80 mph while it was in 2nd gear...and it was just holding the gear at about 5500 rpm. I was gaining about 5-10 mph while it was doing this as well.

And when i get on it from a dead start in 1st gear...it holds the gear about 5500 rpm for about 3-5 seconds before shifting and screeching the tires.

I actually am not sure if i have given it full throttle yet... So this probably is my problem.

u must be giving it full throttle or else it will shift at a lower rpm... and if ur giving it full throttle its having trouble in high rpms.
it trying to reach 5700 rpms but it just doesnt have the power to get it that far...

its like setting the stock shift points at WOT to 7000 rpms... with the stock torque curve it'll never see that high, even if the bottom end could support it. and it would just chill at 58-5900 rpms until u let off the gas.

My car deffinately has the power to get to 5700 rpms. The next time i go out i will try full throttle and see where it shifts at and how long it takes the car to shift.

Thanks

I'm confused on what you're saying the car is actually doing. From your description the tach needle stays at the same place for 3-5 seconds before the car shifts. And you say it still accellerates during this time, which is impossible. The engine rpms have to increase in order to accellerate the car. Please clarify what's actually going on so I can possibly try to help.

after i changed rearend gears my car did the same thing.

It was like the car was building power then it just stops... 3-4 sec later the car shifted...

Did you change the gears from stock?

My cars speedometer must just be slow

Anyway, i havent changed the gears out and i just bought the car about 3 months ago so im not sure what gears it has in it...but im sure they are still just stock.

Based on the acceleration maps that i have been viewing, i believe that i havent been giving all the power that its got. Im just scared i guess...

Because if i dont have the gas all the way down, then i believe the cars shift point will be off.

But the only thing im not sure of is if i am even not giving it all its got the rpms still clime fast and stay at about 5500 rpms.

I guess the only actuall way is to go out and find out...Probably a task for tomorow considering it is snowing right now.

Thanks Guys

If you floor it, then let up a little to about 60% throttle at about 5k rpm, the tranny (like on all electronic trannies) will pause before it shifts because it gets confused. If you're not doing that, it almost sounds to me like you're running lean or have serious timing retard above 5k. time to start checking fuel injectors, pump, filter, and timing.

I actually have done that before. Im not sure if i did that last night but when i first got on it when i got the car it did redline and i let off of the throttle because i wanted it to shift. It just wouldnt shift for about 3 seconds with the transmission in performance mode.

Recently i replaced my fuel filter and added Fuel injector cleaner to my car. Im not running lean, but instead i am running rather rich at my elevation (5500 feet). And i havent checked my timing but im sure it is fine.

Could it be a computer malfunction? Also i have been getting a problem with my transmission when i am cruising at about 50 mph it shifts in and out of overdrive when i let off of the gas

Thanks

Yeah if you get on it at the bottom of a gear and let off before the shift point, then yes, the tranny will pause for a second before shifting into the next gear. But it is nowhere near 3-5 seconds.

Eh, you should of seen my first tranny anything past 1/4 throttle and it would just rev, and one day i was parked somewhere put it in reverse and it went in drive, put a new gm tranny in the car it started smacking the revlimiter before it shifted, the one day i was gboing about 55 the rev's raised but the mph didnt, so now im on the 3rd tranny was replaced under warrenty everything seems to be smooth now though
