How long do you go before you wash your K&N filter?

I've had mine on for about 20,000 miles without washing it. It's the filter that came with my K&N CAI system.

I don't drive on dirt roads or dusty conditions, just normal city and highway driving.
When you've cleaned it, did you notice a difference in throttle response or power?

Thanks,
Dan

you dont clean them until there dirty, i mean really dirty, you wont see any diffrence in throttle when you recharge them either

Thanks. I'm just curious because I noticed a nice difference when I added the K&N CAI, and wondered how much was due to the filter itself and how much was due to the less restrictive intake ducting. Sounds like most of the performance gain is for the lower amount of duct restriction, and not so much the filter. Is that what you're saying?

I cleaned mine about 2 months after buying the car, it came with a moroso CAI and K & N filter....it was realy dirty, like i was shaking clumps of dirt off of it, after a good good clensing, my mpg went from 14 to 19 and i think throttle response was slightly better, but it may have just been me thinking that.

I do mine every month or so during racing season (April-October).

I'd say 75% of the gain you felt when you first installed it had to do with the better intake ducting and then of course some from the larger cone filter with it. From what I've heard a new K&N and new stock filter of the same size, shape will flow almost exactly the same. Where the K&N works better is when it's dirty, it will out flow a similarly dirty stock paper filter. I take mine out (SLP) and clean them at least once a year or 5000 miles. Mine gets dirtier quicker with the underbody air scoop though.

I wouldn't clean it (under normal driving conditions) till about 30k-50k miles. A K&N filters better when it gets dirty, because the dirt will catch more dirt. As far as flow, a K&N with 30k on it will filter about the same as a new paper filter of the same size (ie it's hard to compare a CAI cone filter to the stock rectangular filter).

It also becomes more restrictive .......I clean mine in the spring after the pollen is gone.

Thanks guys.

For those of you that wash the filter fairly often, I assume you re-oil it each time?

Thanks,
Dan

The oil is really the only thing that catches the dirt. Otherwise most of it would pass though the loose cotton gause. That's why it has such low restriction.

Thanks guys. That's what I was assuming, but wanted to get verification.

I think I'll get the oil, and clean mine. May as well, I haven't done anything to the car in a while, and at least it will feel like I'm doing something.

don't over-do the red oil. it gets sucked up through the air intake, MAF, throttle body if you put too much

My car has a K&N CAI and it was major filthy, it came with the car. I pulled it out and cleaned it out for a long time, let it sit and dry over night, then oiled it the next day. I also carefully cleaned the crap off the MAF sensor then pulled it apart and polished on my buffing wheel When I put the car back together, I noticed better throttle response and it gets better mileage now.
