How long can cylinder heads sit before needing a freshening?

I have a set of LT1 cylinder heads (AFR 190s, I believe) that I acquired when I sold some car parts. The heads were not used. I received the heads in 2002 (June, maybe), and I have had them in the box they were received in. How long could the heads sit before the springs would need to be re-done? Thanks.

I'd say the are totally fine, just put some lube on all the moving parts, and you should be good to go.

Did the valves or hardware rust?

I would have the springs tested and replace the seals.

Just be aware those are not good heads anyway, best thing you can do is sell them.

I can confirm that an 'old' set of AFR 190 LT1 heads went well into the 9's on Dave Deluca's nitrous car. I've also seen an LT1 TA run 10.5's on 4lbs. of boost with the same heads.

Again, how are they not good? Lack of positive results just means they weren't popular (read expensive) back then or people that ran them weren't posting their results on the internet....

I doubt anybody runs them 'as cast'. That is just for someone who wants to have them ported by someone else and not AFR.

If you say so but the results I have seen are FAR FAR from that. Like a heads and cam f-body running what my cam only car ran.

Porting changes things and I am sure there are porters who can make them work but generally it is not worth the effort.
