how to keep rear differential from leaking???

i did not have any problems before i change to synthetic. now my differential leaks between the cover (girdle) and the differential. i first tried just a gasket. second time i used two thin bands of rtv silicone sealant on both sides of a new gasket. i torqued the bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 22 ft/lbs both times. my girdle is clean. actually i just got a new one before i did this the second time. maybe i should try a little sand paper on the differential??? i cleaned it off to where there is no gasket or sealant on there. any suggestions?

Indian Head Gasket Shellac.
I just did this and no leaks at all.
I had a bad leak before and that stuff seems to have cured it.

I'm in the same dillemma as you. I just redid mine "again" with synthetic... looking under the back yesterday i noticed it was leaking AGAIN! I can't figure out what im doing wrong, the last time i did my differential i made very sure that the surface was super super clean and that every bolt was done tightly...

Are you guys sure its not coming out of the pinion seal?

Mine leaked from the pinion seal not the cover when I switched to synthetic.

my car has always leaked from the pinion seal. I even had it replaced. It just came back. IMO just leave it alone unless it is leaving more than just a drip a day. Just keep an eye on the level of fluid. DO you have the stock driveshaft? I think the vibrations wore the seal out

I had a slightly warped vibeshaft and it caused my rear to leak at the yoke. Replaced the yoke and pinion seal and never had a problem over the 2 years after that.

Mine was leaking at the drain hole too.
A dab of RTV and put it back in and no leaky.

Make sure you don,t let the level get too low or you will have big broken rearend problems.
If you can find it the Gasket shellac is awesome.
Got a mechanic friend who said "You wanna stop the leak? use this stuff"
He was right.

As long as the plug is fully installed under no circumstances should it leak. They are pipe thread are they not?
